FOUNDATION FOCUS

NOVEMBER 2021

PLEASE JOIN US!
Witness the successes that occur when community and schools work together this Friday, December 3rd, 8:30 a.m. at Sarah Scott Middle School. This will be a fun, engaging event as we award the school wide grants, and each principal speaks briefly about their project.  Programs range from school wide math and literacy initiatives, creative STEM projects, attendance/behavior/academic incentive programs, and much more! We will also be honoring two longtime supporters, SMC, Inc. and the Hollie and Anna Oakley Foundation with our Leadership Giving Award. The coffee will be hot and the program uplifting - we hope to see you there! RSVP here

As we come into this season of giving, say thank you to your favorite teacher, school employee or coach.
The Vigo County Education Foundation Thank-A-Teacher Program is a way to recognize that special educator along with helping support local school and classroom grants. Honorees receive a special pin and bookmark. You may make your donation to thank a teacher here

MINI GRANT FEATURES:
"Come Play with Me," at Hoosier Prairie Elementary, is made possible through a collaboration between the VCEF and the Purdue Extension Office. Purdue Extension purchased the playground stencils, and Ms. Jahn received a mini grant to purchase the colorful paints and supplies. Physical activity in the elementary school setting increases attention span, higher productivity, and better overall health. These stencils transform playgrounds into exciting, beautiful displays of games children love to play and offer alternatives to running, playing tag or sitting on a bench. Children are involved in purposeful play while promoting health, fitness, education and social emotional learning activities. These paints and stencils are being shared with other VCSC elementary schools.
Benjamin Franklin Elementary's mini grant, "Can You Still Hear Me, Ben?" builds on a previous year's school wide grant, providing even more engaging, preloaded Playaway audio books for students in preschool through grade 5. Exposing children to the spoken word via rich stories improves literacy especially for those children who have not been exposed to a rich array of words over their lives. Listening to stories with more complex language expands their stable of words and exposes them to more sophisticated stories. Teachers and parents who read aloud to children have long known good stories have the power to captivate the most restless of kids. While books require readers to decode every word, stories told aloud via audio books free up the listener to connect with the story and the storyteller. It provides an emotional connection to the narrator.
We are thrilled that field trips are back! The Vigo County Education Foundation is providing the transportation and entry fees for all VCSC first graders to experience the joy and excitement of hands-on STEM learning at the Terre Haute Children's Museum. YOU make this possible!

Thank you to the Wabash Valley Community Foundation for the $10,000 grant in support of recovering from the financial losses brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you to our generous community for making this possible through your donations for this $1 for $2 matching challenge opportunity.
The VCEF funded the transportation of all VCSC second graders to Junior Pioneer Days, held at Fowler Park.  They were able to experience firsthand how early Indiana settlers lived.
