We’ve created a new in-house charity research team

Last year, the pandemic contributed to a “historically unprecedented” increase in the number of global poor, pushing nearly 100 million people into extreme poverty. And an estimated 811 million people went hungry as climate extremes and economic slowdowns, exacerbated by the pandemic, continued to increase in frequency and intensity.

At the same time, the world saw global wealth surpass $400 trillion for the first time. US charitable giving reached nearly half a trillion dollars, and international aid reached an all-time high of $160 billion.

In short, even as there is great need, there is also an abundance of wealth and an unprecedented willingness to help.

In this time of great need, our recommended nonprofits have continued to lead the way with high-impact, cost-effective interventions that save the most lives per dollar. But we also believe that there are many effective interventions and organizations out there that could save and improve even more lives if additional funding were directed their way. That’s why we’ve created a new, nimble in-house charity research team to identify more effective giving opportunities and provide even better donation advice to you.

The research team is tasked with first developing a new, adaptive charity evaluation framework for The Life You Can Save. This will be applied to current and future charity candidates in different cause areas and geographies, and with different approaches to creating impact. The framework will help us identify a wider range of great nonprofits that are addressing the urgent needs of the 700 million people currently estimated to be living in extreme poverty.

Our in-house charity research team will provide our current supporters with more choice, better guidance and a greater ability to give how they want, all with the confidence that they are supporting some of the best nonprofits out there. And by expanding the set of choices we offer, we hope to attract new donors who are passionate about particular causes, so we can guide them to give better in those cause areas.

And of course, alongside these new research initiatives, we’ll continue to work hard to support our recommended nonprofits and spread the concept of effective giving around the world. In this way, we hope to inspire more donors to give better and help reduce poverty faster.

While our new research and evaluation framework will be fully implemented in 2022, we expect to announce our first new recommendations later this month. In the meantime, you can read our full update about our plans here:

We welcome your feedback as we continue to refine our approach to best serve our wonderful community of supporters.

Do Good. Feel Good.

Rickard Vikström
Executive Director of The Life You Can Save

P.S. Later today we will be announcing matching opportunities of US$2.6 million in support of several effective charities. That’s a bigger dollar-for-dollar match than what Facebook is offering globally 1:1! Stay tuned.
