Record Provisional National and State Drug Overdose Data

Drug overdoses killed more than 100,000 people in the United States during the one-year period ending in April 2021, according to provisional data issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This marks the first time that drug overdose deaths reached six figures in one year and represents a 29% increase in overdose deaths from the prior year. See link below for access to state data.



The report offers a visualization that presents the reported and predicted provisional counts of deaths due to drug overdose occurring nationally and in each jurisdiction.

FCC Approves Text-to-988 Access to Suicide Prevention Lifeline

The FCC voted to approve a Second Report and Order to expand access to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline by establishing the ability to text 988 to directly reach the Lifeline to better support at-risk communities in crisis, including youth and individuals with disabilities. Read more.

With More than Half of Americans Experiencing Emotional Distress, Comprehensive Plan for 988 Crisis Hotline Envisions Robust Continuum of Care

A collaborative of 15 of the nation’s leading mental health professional organizations, advocacy groups and funders published a roadmap to guide mental health crisis response mandated by the National Suicide Hotline Designation Act of 2020. Read more.  

Mental Health Resources Grow for Michigan Farmers

MSU Extension’s Legacy of the Land program, which focuses on farmers’ mental health and financial wellness, completed its first year in September. It is funded by a two-year $500,000 grant from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Read more.  

States Allowing Telehealth Prescriptions for Opioid Use Disorder

Early on in the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government implemented several telehealth flexibilities to allow states to maximize access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD). While these flexibilities remain allowable until the end of the federal public health emergency (PHE), state approaches to prescribing MOUD via telehealth currently vary greatly. Read more.
