Nov 2021 - 60! Celebrations, No Turkey, 100 years, Despair, Thanks-Giving
A Season of Thanks,
November has been a tidal wave of great joy and great sorrow. The Art*Bar mini show was a crazy artist hangout date with the Martini Girls and company. The exhibit continues through 2021. I turned 60 (joy & sorrow - lol). It was over a week ago. I am still celebrating. There were truly emotional, for me, get-togethers with friends I have not seen since pre-pandemic. No big parties, but dear friends, dancing, day drinking, feasting, Simma’s cheesecake, great live music and lots of love. Mom and I had a spa date - she treated me to my first manicure. I also got a second crown (thanks to my dentist). We celebrated Thanksgiving Day very small. Elsa, Adam and sweet Sophia joined us. No turkey fanatics - so I kicked that tradition to the curb and made tenderloin filets and shrimp with Bearnaise sauce. We watched The Sound of Music. Sophia sang along. She’s really into marionette puppets these days – it was delightful watching her experience ‘The Lonely Goatherd’ for the first time! Two days later my daughter in law supplied a turkey feast with all the trimmings. That’s a whole heaping lot to be thankful for.
On the opposite end are trials, tribulations, virus mutations, anti-vaccinations, climate and economic catastrophe, guns and violence, lack of human rights, hate, inequality, polarization, corruption, addiction, investigations, overpriced education & healthcare. Holy shit. Some days feel heavy and endlessly dark. It’s easy to despair. To lose hope…But don’t. Compare these problems to what things were like 100 years ago. The average life span was just a little over 50. Here is some perspective, with photos > Life 100 years ago. Despite it all, the world is not a bad place. Turn off the news. Hug your loved ones. Volunteer. Cut the consumerism and make gifts, or give the gift of your time. Shop small. Shop local (from me if you want). If you can, be ‘thanks-giving’ and forgiving. It's not always easy. Every day is a gift. Don’t wait. My dear aunt Skaidrite is in Hospice care. We were able to visit her while she was quite lucid. She squeezed my hand and admired a fall flower bouquet. I am so grateful.
There is always much to be thankful for. A place to live, people to love, fat pants, and cheesecake. And Christmas music! I’ll be playing and hosting a sing-along (with my piano students) on Dec 18, 2pm at The Landmark of West Allis. Join us.
