To get you ahead of the game in 2022, we have picked out some key events that we think you will enjoy. Kicking off in March is British Science Week (11th-20th). This year's theme is Growth and you will find resources to help get you started in their newly released taster packs.

In June, Cheltenham will be celebrating it's very own Science Festival (7th-12th) and the Royal International Air Tattoo will be making a return in July (15th-17th). Take a look at how you can get free tickets for your school.

We continue to keep pupils and staff safe by regularly updating our workshop risk assessment with Covid-19 protocols. Please contact us if you would like to view it.

Welcome Aboard!

We are excited to welcome Steve to the STEMworks team. Here is what he has to say...

'I am a highly motivated Primary STEM specialist, with 26 years teaching experience. Over this time, I have created and sustained multi-school STEM initiatives and networks.

As well as supporting national STEM organisations,  I believe in the importance of enabling children to see that they can impact positively on their world through STEM subjects and projects, and by engaging with industry and communities. I believe too, that children can best achieve this through planned hands on practical STEM opportunities, that are relevant to their world.

It is vital that we provide children with the STEM skills to support their understanding of environmental and STEM issues, so they can fully participate as global citizens.'

As you can tell Steve's beliefs and experience makes him the perfect addition to the STEMworks team, we can't wait for you to meet him as he is settles into his new role.

The Royal International Air Tattoo

British Science Week Taster Packs

British Science Week will take place from the 11th - 20th March and the sneak-peak taster packs are now available to download for free!

There are taster packs for Early Years, Primary and Secondary levels, so you can get pupils and students of all ages involved in the build-up to the Week.

Each pack contains two activities based on this year’s theme of ‘Growth’, from plant growth to careers in growth industries, as well as details of our British Science Week poster competition, which is of course back for 2022!

The packs also include plenty of other information to help you start planning your projects, including tips for involving volunteers, gathering resources and unlocking young learners’ skills.

Find the taster packs here:   Early Years Primary Secondary

The activities have been designed so that they can be used towards CREST Star and SuperStar Awards.

Brand New CREST Award Resources

In partnership with the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, two new CREST Awards resources have been designed to encourage students to consider issues around the climate crisis.

The new packs are for Silver Award and Gold Award level students, and include several investigative projects about hydrology. Students are asked to consider real-world issues such as flooding and drought, and how the climate crisis impacts water availability for agriculture, infrastructure, public health and more!
It is becoming increasingly important that we teach young people how climate change is continuing to affect the world around us, and how we may need to adapt in the future.

These student-led CREST projects are an excellent resource for inspiring older students to think about how STEM careers could help to create a more sustainable future.

Educational Outreach with National Grid

STEMworks are working with National Grid to support local communities impacted by the Hinkley Connection project by offering energy and electricity workshops to local schools.

National Grid are introducing new T pylons that will connect low carbon electricity from Hinkley Point C Nuclear power station. 116 new T-pylons will be erected in Somerset along a 57km route, connecting six million homes and businesses to low carbon energy. The T pylons will run between Bridgwater and Portbury, other than through the Mendip Hills AONB where the new connection goes underground. The project also includes the removal of 249 electricity pylons between Bridgwater and Avonmouth.

Our workshops highlight the work of National Grid and support the Science and D&T curriculums. KS1 pupils learn about the suns energy and make a lever mechanism. The KS2 workshop investigates conductors and insulators and each pupil constructs a circuit to build their own buzz wire game.

The Hinkley Connection project will be ready to connect to Hinkley Point C by the end of 2024, with the project complete at the end of 2025. To find out more about the work National Grid are doing in Somerset, click here.

LEGO Robotics help to bridge Worcester's digital skills divide

Over 60 young people and their families had fun whilst learning essential ‘coding’ skills for free, at a series of LEGO Robotics workshops run by STEMworks which took place at Ronkswood, Horizon and Warndon Community Centres over the Autumn half term holiday.

The events, which were funded by Worcester City Council, introduced 7 to 15-year-olds to the art of coding.  Further community-based sessions are planned as part of Worcester’s Town Investment Plan, which aims to help residents develop sought-after skills needed for some better paid jobs.

The event was also supported by the Worcester-based TDM Training Academy, a leading tech and digital transformation training provider.  Staff offered advice to young people and families about apprenticeships and training to gain digital qualifications.

“The pandemic has accelerated the need for more of us to improve our digital skills.  We want to ensure that every child in Worcester can access Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths training to help boost their employability for the future,” said Cllr Lucy Hodgson, Chair of the City Council’s Place and Economic Development Committee.

“Working with the Worcester Community Trust and other partners, we aim to develop a year-round programme of coding and Raspberry Pi after school clubs and holiday activities.”

“The events were a great success; many attendees asked when we are going to do this again. They had come from across the City, showing that there is real demand for these types of activities,” said Helen Davis, new Director of Skills and Training at Worcester Community Trust.

Mo Follis, from STEMworks said – “Taking part in our robotics workshops helps the children develop excellent skills which are easily transferrable to real life, including problem solving, communication and resilience. All of these are essential attributes for a career in the STEM sector”.

Slippery Slidey Shoes with CREST Awards

Take a look at the Star Slippery Slidey Shoes Activity. In this challenge, students will investigate friction and what test different types of shoes for their slipperyness!

More information about CREST Awards can be found at crestawards.org.

Cheltenham Science Festival

How long is a piece of string? What makes the world turn? And why does chocolate taste so good? Nothing is off limits at Cheltenham Science Festival.

Every year the festival is joined by the world’s greatest scientists, futurologists and thought-leaders to help make sense of the world around us.

With past speakers including Brian Cox, Robert Winston and Maddie Moate the festival is the perfect place to expand your mind. Join in from the 7th-12th June 2022 for debate, discovery, experiments, enjoyment and hands-on fun!

If you are planning on celebrating this event in school, get in touch to see how we can support you.

Great Science Share for Schools 2022

The Great Science Share for Schools is an annual, national campaign to inspire 5-14 year olds to ask, investigate and share their scientific questions.

The campaign culminates on Tuesday 14th June 2022, when everyone is encouraged to share their findings with new audiences; online, in school, in homes, in their community - anywhere!
