Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University Centre for Academic Integrity

By Salim Razi

Towards the end of 2020, the Turkish Council of Higher Education approved the establishment of the “Centre for Academic Integrity (CAI)” at Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU). This is the first centre in Turkey specialising in academic integrity; COMU CAI started organising activities in the first quarter of 2021. As a founder member of the European Network for Academic Integrity, COMU was already involved in several events promoting academic integrity before the official establishment of the Centre. Following its inception, the Centre has accelerated its promotional activities concerning academic integrity.

As evidence of its commitment to the promotion of academic integrity, COMU CAI organized four seminars within the scope of the "European Academic Integrity Week", which was celebrated between 18-22 October 2021 this year. The seminars were held for COMU students and academic staff at COMU Troy Culture Centre; and they addressed academics, undergraduates, postgraduates, and international students. The seminars were delivered by Dr Salim Razı, the Director of the Centre and the founder Board member of the ENAI, and aimed to establish an institutional culture of academic integrity at COMU. The seminars were recorded by COMU TV and the recordings (in English) are available after the event at COMU TV YouTube channel.

Dr Sedat Murat, the President of COMU, delivered the opening speech at the event and highlighted the importance of any teaching, learning, and research related activity at the University being associated with the principles of academic integrity. Dr Murat emphasised the requirement for building a culture of academic integrity at COMU since the University aims to get institutional accreditation very soon from the Turkish Higher Education Quality Council.

Since the development of institutional academic integrity culture requires cooperation with all stakeholders, the Centre believes in the value of students and expects that COMU students will take an active role in this process. In this direction, the Centre recently announces the establishment of its “Student Committee” which aims to contribute to raising awareness in establishing an institution-wide academic integrity culture among students in line with the goals of the Centre.

The Student Committee consists of two PhD students, three MA students and one BA student and acts as a bridge between the Centre and the student community. The primary responsibilities of the Committee are to produce content for social media to increase awareness about academic integrity, organizing social media campaigns, curating materials for students, and helping to conduct events organized by the Centre. The Student Committee is open to collaboration at both national and international levels.

Integrity in Education for Future Happiness

By Zeenath Reza Khan

ENAI's 6th International Conference Plagiarism Across Europe and Beyond 2020 (PAEB2020) was a milestone for ENAI. Although we were intending to hold it face to face in Dubai, UAE, due to the global pandemic, we were able to experience a virtual conference for the first time.

After the conference authors were invited to submit full papers based on the presentations they delivered  at the conference, which became chapters in an edited book "Integrity in Education for Future Happiness". Fifteen chapters were accepted representing 25 authors and geographical locations ranging from UAE to Hungary, Slovakia, Japan, Sweden, Canada,  Bangladesh, Montenegro, USA, and UK.

The chapters provide a wide plethora of research work from looking at teacher training, to pedagogy, to big data and plagiarism, digital forensics and plagiarism, detection systems, policies, support systems to help students, drivers and enablers of such challenging behaviours, teaching ethics and so much more. The book was edited by Dr Zeenath Reza Khan (UOWD UAE), Professor Christopher Hill (BUID UAE) and Dr Tomas Foltynek (ENAI) and published by Mendel University Press, Czech Republic.

The UOWD core conference committee, which won the 2021 ENAI Special Award for COVID19 response, organised a book launch this year at the Sharjah International Book Fair, one of the largest in the world, for the edited book. The book, aptly dedicated to late Tracey Bretag, was unveiled by Ms Lynn Stanbridge from Sharjah Private Education Authority (UAE), surrounded by co-authors, editors, friends, family and other participants that enjoyed the talks and the discussions on academic integrity and student well-being.

The book is available as an online version here, and a physical copy may be purchased through the ENAI Shop here. A review of the book is available from the International Journal for Educational Integrity (SpringerNature) by Dr Irene Glendinning here. Congratulations to all involved!

Bridging Integrity in Higher Education, Business and Society: Project Meeting in Brno and Invitation

We have already informed you about the Bridge Erasmus+ project involving ENAI members (Uppsala University and Mendel University in Brno) and partners from Lithuania, North Macedonia and Ukraine. Bridge  seeks to create a bridge of intersectoral integrity by deepening the understanding of integrity in higher education, business, and society and by providing relevant skills needed to act in accordance with the values of academic ethics.

The project started already in 2020, but only this October, there was the first face-to-face meeting which took place in Brno. The main aim of the meeting was to work together on the project outputs. Regarding the outputs, you can look forward to the academic integrity checklists for master and PhD students and their supervisors, and gamified cases of academic and research integrity (we have already seen illustrations for the game from the Ukrainian partner and they are astonishing).

Invitation to Contribute to the Bridge Project

If you are a person who has knowledge and experience with Citizen Science (CS)  you are kindly invited to share your insights on topics indicated here.
Your examples and insights might be used for developing the Guidelines for Ethical CS and educational material with gamified cases in the frame of the Bridge project. Your answers will serve to create educational material for Master Students, PhD and Supervisors.
We would appreciate it if you answered the questions by 20th of January 2022.

Essay Mills to be Banned in UK

On 5th October, the UK government agreed to make it illegal in England for companies and individuals to provide materials (essays, exam answers, etc) and unauthorised support for students (aged 16 and above) that contribute to their assessed work. Advertising such services will also be illegal. The legislation is included in the Skills and Post-16 Education Bill. There are more details in the official press release from the UK government. The latest information, (with thanks to Michael Draper and QAA’s Gareth Crossman), is that the bill is now at the Report Stage and is expected to receive “Royal Assent” in January or February 2022, then come into force a few months later. This legislation only applies to England, because the devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are responsible for their own educational policies. It was timely and convenient to include the legislation with the Skills bill, but this means it will only apply to post-16 education.
