Decathlon Team Places in 10 events
The South Decathlon team competed on Saturday, Dec. 4 in Corpus Christi at King High School. Decathlon team members - Jay Ayala, Joaquin Garza, Hunter Vasquez, Zoey Zamora, and Vivian Pena amassed a total of 11 bronze medals, five silver medals, and numerous ribbons. Team members placed in each of the 10 events. Jay Ayala, Zoey Zamora, and Vivian Pena each placed as top overall individual competitors in their division. South received 3rd place overall in the medium-large school category.
Tierra Santa Golf Course Tournament
Congratulations to our golf team for earning 2nd place this past weekend at the golf tournament in Weslaco at Tierra Santa Golf Course. Pictured are Jeffrey Janik, Roman Andablo, Raul Ramirez, Malachi Pena, and Thomas Garza. Thank you, Coach Milligan and Coach Abbott!
South Senior Pitcher Kingsville Bound
Congratulations to Harlingen South Senior pitcher Janyssa Ramos! She signed to continue her education and softball career at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

A round of applause to our Hawk Air Force JROTC for their RGV Skills Meet at Hanna HS, Saturday, Dec. 11 against high schools from Laredo to Brownsville.
College & Career Room Is At Your Service
The College and Career Center located in the 300 wing is always ready to assist students with applications for college, financial aid, and scholarships. Mark your calendars: FASFA applications are due on Jan. 15! 
Mighty Hawk Band Performances
We are very proud of our students who have represented our community at the Region 28 Band Concert and the City of Harlingen Christmas parade!
The City of Harlingen celebrated the holiday season with the annual Christmas parade on Friday, Dec. 3. This year's theme was a Candyland Christmas. The parade ran east on Jackson St. rather than west like they typically do. It featured local school organizations, floats, cheer squads, dancing horses, local car show, and Santa Claus. 
HCISD Academies
The HCISD academies, ranging from the Fire Academy to the Pre-Vet Academy to the Welding Academy (just to name a few), open many doors to Harlingen students. These hands-on learning opportunities help facilitate future careers. 1st Place Forensics Sweepstakes
Congratulations to our Speech, Drama, and Debate team for earning first-place sweepstakes at the O’Connor Tournament. Placers include Madison Hushen, Josh Treviño, Alec Araguz, Abigail Burton, Devin Claudio, C.J. Heiskell, Bruce Gonzales, Adrianna Rodriguez, Aaron Blount, Jorge Gonzales, Brendan Cisneros, Cadee Velasquez, Kole Kibler, and Esmeralda Trevino.
Swim Fall Classic
The Swim Fall Classic was held Dec. 2 and 3 at the Harlingen Aquatic Center. In the 100 Breaststroke, Eliana Wainscott placed 1st. In 100 Freestyle, Mia Gonzalez placed 2nd. In the 100 Backstroke, Mia Hinojosa placed 3rd. In 500 Freestyle, Issac Oviedo placed 2nd. In the 400 Free Relay, Mia Gonzalez, Eliana Wainscott, Mia Hinojosa, and Daniela Gonzalez placed 2nd. In the 200 Free Relay, Mia Gonzalez, Eliana Wainscott, Mia Hinojosa, and Daniela Gonzalez placed 2nd. In the 200 Individual Medley, Frank Pimentel placed 2nd & Ana Porzycki placed 3rd. In the 50 Free Mia Gonzalez placed 2nd.

Macy's Parade in New York City

The Southern Stars traveled to New York City to perform in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They did an amazing job at representing South at the Big Apple!

All-Region Orchestra 

South’s Orchestra students participated in the Region 28 All-Region Orchestra Clinic and Concert on Nov. 5 and 6 which is an audition-only event and was held at the HCISD Performing Arts Center. 

PTSA December Students of the Month

Congratulations to seniors Levi Ince and Noah Peters for being selected as December's PTSA Students of the Month! These students excel academically and in extracurricular activities. We wish them the best in all of their future endeavors!

Visiting SpaceX
Sophomores in Mr. Bruseth's and Mr. Lopez's STEM classes went to visit the Boca Chica SpaceX facilities on Nov. 17. During their tour, they learned about the various stages of the rocket assembly line and Elon Musk's plans for the future of the facility. 

STEM Students Participate in Engineering Competition

South’s Robotics and Engineering students, under the supervision of Mr. Lopez and Mr. Bruseth, will be participating in the Greenpower Race competition. Greenpower's objective is to inspire more young people to become engineers. The students will be designing, building, and racing electric powered cars all year long in Texas to test the limits and see how fast these types of cars can go.

'Tis The Season To Sing

Our Harlingen South Choir hosted a Christmas Concert on Thursday, Dec. 9. The concert took place at First United Methodist Church and included solos and duets from the Varsity Choir's Jessica Torres and Adam Ramos. The concert also featured performances from the Junior Varsity Women's Choir and a finale performance by all combined choirs singing "The Lord Bless You and Keep You"

South Soccer Season Underway

Our Harlingen South soccer teams are getting ready for their upcoming season. Their first district game is on Jan. 25 against Brownsville Hanna. Our varsity boys plan to advance multiple rounds, while the varsity girls are aiming for the title of "District Champs". One of their toughest competitors this year is Harlingen High School. The South Varsity Girls’ team is coached by Omar Pedroza, and the South Varsity Boys’ team is coached by Julian Robles. 

JROTC Cadets Hold Successful Fundraiser 

JROTC raised almost $3,000 by washing cars at the Harlingen Pep Boys on Saturday, Dec. 4. The fundraiser will help pay for their educational field trips and physical training activities. 

Spreading Some Christmas Cheer

South teachers, staff, and students are combining their efforts to spread a little Christmas cheer around the campus by decorating their classroom doors. Harlingen South wishes everyone a safe and restful Christmas break. Happy holidays to all!

Annual Arroyo Lighting Festivities

Our Southern Stars and Cheer squad performed for Harlingen residents on Thursday, Dec. 2. Crowds gathered to experience dancing, beautiful lights, music, food, and fun. Our HHSS performers entertained young and old for a jolly good evening.  

HHSS Custodians Receive a Big Thanks

Mrs. Blunt's students recently prepared goodie bags and created a large card filled with thoughtful notes of thanks and signed with all their names that they presented to our South custodians as a way to thank them for the tremendous job they do day in and day out.
