Encouraging environmentally sustainable death-care options and the preservation of natural areas through green burial.
Where to Find GBC-Certified Providers
(& How to Refer Your Local Cemetery)
The Green Burial Council aims to be a resource for those interested in learning more about their local cemeteries and funeral homes that provide green end-of-life options. GBC-certified providers are listed on our website and are available on our interactive maps (pictured below).

You might notice some areas on this map are blank. The map shows only the providers that are certified according to the standards of the GBC. If you know of a cemetery, funeral home, or product provider doing great, green work in these areas, we would appreciate a referral! Please reply to this email and let us know who to contact.

Love your local cemetery and want them to offer more green end-of-life options? Here are some conversation starters.

Everyone is invited to watch the recording of the opening night program of the 2021 Conference, for the "green burial curious." Hosted by Gail Rubin, certified thanatologist and The Doyenne of Death®, the conversation was humorous and honest, including videos of green burial as it has been portrayed on television. Fellow conference presenters Dr. Basil Eldadah and Joél Simone Anthony joined, too.

Green Burial in the News

"Natural Funeral Practices

There are many options for end-of-life practices with low environmental impact."

This article by Carla Tilghman in Mother Earth News takes a lighthearted look at our favorite serious subject: natural burial.

"If you search online for 'green death,' the first results might include a 'Doctor Who' television episode; a 'How to Train your Dragon' wiki fandom for the franchise; a heavy metal band; articles on the perils of 19th-century arsenic-based dyes; and a vodka-based cocktail. From these results, you might conclude that 'green death' as a concept hasn’t entered common parlance enough to trump these other cultural touchstones. But thankfully, searching for 'green funerals' or 'green burials' instead reveals the opposite: there are many alternatives to traditional burial or cremation that are increasingly available. All these death-care practices share a focus on environmentally safe, humane, and loving ways to care for human and animal bodies, so you can choose the one that fits your last wishes.
