DS: The new $1.2 trillion infrastructure spending law can benefit the lighting industry.

Infrastructure Bill to Stimulate Construction
Source: inside.lighting

On Friday, U.S. Congress passed the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, described by the White House as "a once-in-a-generation investment in our nation’s infrastructure and competitiveness."

Once adopted into law, the bill promises to deliver a myriad of large-scale well-funded projects. Based on the nature and scope of the projects that would require many months of design and planning, the widespread construction impact may not be felt until 2023 or later. Some of the sections of the legislation may have a direct positive impact on the lighting and electrical industry. But we should note that the $110 billion earmarked for roads and bridges is likely to focus more on asphalt, concrete and steel more than it will provide an abundance of dynamically-illuminated, color changing bridges.

DS: IES Ethics Committee finds no accounting fraud nor wrongful terminations by IES.

IES Committee Unanimously Finds No Ethical Misconduct
Source: inside.lighting

In March 2021, former employee of the Illuminating Engineering Society, Shayna Bramley, made allegations against the organization including wrongful termination of a whistleblower and improper accounting.

Ms. Bramley’s allegations led to a months-long investigation by the IES Ethics Committee. At the IES Board of Directors meeting on October 26, the Board approved and adopted the findings of the Ethics Committee which “unanimously found that the allegations were not supported by evidence and recommended to the Board that the investigation be closed.”

DS: DOE issues new 2022 CCMS templates to certify regulated appliances, including lighting.

DOE’s Compliance Certification Management System (CCMS) has Posted New Versions of All Templates and Registration Authorization Forms
Source:  U.S. Department of Energy

CCMS is the on-line interface through which manufacturers of covered products and commercial equipment must electronically submit compliance and certification information to DOE. DOE has posted revised versions of all of its certification templates to reflect OMB’s approval of DOE’s Information Collection Package extending the expiration date to September 30, 2024 for OMB Control Number 1910-1400. There were no changes to any of the required data on the Input tab of these templates. Manufacturers who have kept the Excel copies of the previous template versions can just copy and paste data from the Input tab when making future submissions. (Please do not drag and drop the data as it will cause an error.) DOE has placed the updated templates on the CCMS Templates page.  In addition, new versions of all registration and authorization forms have been posted on the CCMS Registration and Authorization Forms page.
  • These revised templates can be submitted now for new or revised certification, but must be used beginning January 1, 2022.
  • Submissions made on previous versions of these templates do not have to be resubmitted until the next annual certification date for each template.
  • New authorization forms also have been posted, which must be used beginning January 1, 2022. Current authorization forms do not need to be submitted unless information needs to be changed.
  • Download these templates from CCMS Template page.
  • Download the registration and authorization forms from the CCMS Registration and Authorization Forms page.

DS: Flexible LED filaments are now available from 2 inches to 4 feet long.  Encased in silicone, they have the look of a side-emitting fiber optic, but with extreme flexibility and tiny bend radius.

How To Use Flexible LED Filament Wire for Lighting Projects!
Source: You Tube/ Adam Savage's Tested

We experiment with LED filament wire, a flexible form of LED lighting that is most commonly seen in LED edison bulbs. Norm walks through how to get these lights up and running and the different ways to string and power them to use in scale-model lighting projects, like this Blade Runner-inspired mini "neon" sign!

DS: Lighting manufacturers respond to supply chain cost hikes with price increases, freight minimum increases, and/or surcharges.

Prices, Terms and Surcharges Steadily Increase
Source: inside.lighting

A leading maker of lighting controls told us that to help a customer meet a deadline they recently paid $86 for components that normally cost around $8.  There are likely dozens (or possibly hundreds) of similar stories experienced by other lighting makers during this challenging year that have sourcing departments facing one supply chain hurdle after another.  Consequently, lighting industry price increases have become commonplace and more companies seem to be adjusting their terms in conjunction with raising prices.

DS:  How COVID has jumpstarted the smart home market, the coming of smart wifi routers, and the role of telecoms.

Why Smart Home Is a Smart Play for Operators
Source: Broadband TV News / Stuart Griffin

Covid-19 has had many side effects and one of them has been to rejuvenate the smart home. A market that was previously in decline is now revving up and operators have a springboard into its heart.

Analysts predict the value of the global smart home market will soar to between $138.9 billion (Markets and Markets 2021) and $622.59 billion (Fortune Business Insights 2021) by 2026 as connectivity is introduced across a wider range of home devices from security cameras to utility meters, and thermostats. The pandemic has already amplified demand for smart appliances for security, climate control, lighting and health alongside smart TVs. Connectivity is likely to become so pervasive to the extent of being embedded in every household device in the coming years (GFK 2021). The exponential growth in working from home and the urgent need for energy-saving and low carbon emission solutions are also driving demand.

DS:  Automotive laser projection is in development.

Laser Light Projection May Soon be a Reality for Cars
Source: US Lighting Trends

Together with research partners Silicon Austrian Labs, Evatec, EV Group, and TDK Electronics, lighting specialist ZKW Group is working on “micromirror” technology involving laser light projection for the auto industry. This microelectromechanical system (MEMS) consists of a chip with integrated, microscopic mirror mechanics; the micromirror can be pivoted around two axes by means of piezoelectricity and enables a laser beam to be specifically and precisely directed. The goal is to enable smart lighting functions for vehicles, such as the projection of symbols (i.e. arrows) and warnings onto the road, or flexible, adaptive vehicle lighting. This technology can be used in front lights, rear lights, or as side projection, as well as in LIDAR systems for optical distance measurement.
