A newsletter of the District 1 Community Council.
Battle Creek | Conway  | Eastview | Highwood
Hello all,

Keep an eye out for SECO annual report that goes out in December. It should be hitting mailboxes mid to late month and will include a summary of what we accomplished this year!

I'm also asking for your support in identifying future board members for SECO!  Board members can be as young as 16, and should live or work in our district. Annual elections come up in April (which will be here before we know it), and we're getting a jump start on recruitment. I'm happy to speak with anyone who is interested, or even just has questions. This is a great opportunity for folks to learn about the work of district councils and the City of St. Paul. Please send an email if you are interested in meeting this month!

Thank you,
Betsy Mowry Voss
Executive Director

City of St. Paul 1-4 Unit Housing Study

Saint Paul is a growing and evolving city. Demographics are changing, and family and residential needs are changing as well. For example, we have many  homes with multiple generations living in the home and not enough affordable housing to meet community need.. The City is looking for ways of creating additional housing stock that meets a broader amount of needs. This will increase density as well. Planning and Economic Development will be working with community to get input on this vision. The plan is to look at smaller homes, increased townhomes, duplexes and triplexes and less restrictions on accessory dwelling units.

Saint Paul’s Zoning Code controls how much housing can be built in certain parts of the City. These requirements make it difficult to build enough new housing to fix Saint Paul’s current housing shortage. City Council Resolution 18-1204 and the 2040 Comprehensive Plan call for studying ways to allow more neighborhood-scale housing in all areas of the City.

Tree Planting in Our City - The Met Council Seeks Your Input

The Met Council is seeking input from communities on Growing Shade – Tree Planting Prioritization and Maintenance Tool. If you can spare 5-10  minutes of your time to engage with the beta version of the tool and answer this short survey, this feedback would help them refine and improve the tool. You can also find a short training video herePlease respond to this survey by Friday, Dec. 3.

Trees help communities thrive.
Community-wide benefits of trees include cooler temperatures, improved air quality, cleaner stormwater, improved mental health, and enhanced biodiversity. Enhancing tree canopy cover is an actionable step to create healthy places for people to live and a resilient future. The Growing Shade Project provides data and resources to inform tree planting and canopy maintenance for the greater Twin Cities region.

Get Your Booster!

The MN Dept. of Health recommends that all adults receive a COVID-19 booster shot. Individuals who received a Pfizer or Moderna vaccine are recommended to receive a booster vaccine shot at least 6 months after their second vaccine dose. Individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson Vaccine are advised to receive a booster at least two months after their vaccination shot. To date 80% of Minnesota's population over the age of 18  have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Only 60.3% of Minnesota's African heritage adult population have been fully vaccinated, and 20% of children age 5 - 11 have been vaccinated.
