all day - Fundraiser at Franklins for PG Day Center
Dear People of Hope,
It is the time of year when things can be busy. Our church announcements and invitations are no different. There is a lot happening at Hope in the coming weeks. We hope these invitations fill our lives with service, community, and the love of Christ. Join us for any of the below Advent and Christmas events and opportunities.
Peace of Christ,
Pastor Julie
ps - Worship at Hope now includes congregational singing and indoor communion. Zoom worship continues for those who prefer an online option. Starting December 5, we'll be merging technology with Living Water SDA Church, and we expect our zoom experience will improve significantly.
Advent at Hope
Special worship and events starting Sunday November 28
Saturday December 11, noon-2pm, families and anyone interested are invited to an Advent Petting Zoo, remembering that Jesus was born among animals. Join the group anytime on Hope's front lawn; invite friends and neighbors.
Wednesday evenings at 6pm we join with All Saints Lutheran Church in Bowie (by zoom) for a book study on "Difficult Words of Jesus." This is a 6-week study, including 2 weeks in January. Friends welcome.
Sunday evening, December 19, 7:30pm, as we approach Christmas, Hope will host a Longest Night worship service, for prayer and reflection, acknowledging the pain and grief that this season can hold. Consider who you might invite to this evening of prayerful reflection.
Friday December 24, at 7:30pm we will gather in person and online for a Christmas Eve worship service with candle light and carols.
Sunday December 26, at 10:30am we gather for worship with lessons and carols, hearing and singing the Christmas story.
movies@hope presents Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Friday December 3, 7:30pm at Hope
Join us this Friday as movies@hope celebrates the Christmas season with the 1971 family classic, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, starring the great Gene Wilder, with songs by the late Leslie Bricusse. Fifty years on, this beloved fantasy about a boy and his adventure in the chocolate factory of the mysterious Willy Wonka continues to enchant children of all ages and will be joined by a pre-quel to be released soon. See it again or see it for the first time, and join your friends and neighbors for the post-film discussion!
Fundraiser at Franklin’s to Benefit CUCE All Day Monday December 6
Enjoy lunch, dinner, or carry-out at Franklin’s, in Hyattsville all day on Monday, December 6, and get an early start on your Christmas shopping in the general store, to benefit the day center run by Congregations United for Compassion and Empowerment (CUCE). Franklin’s will donate 20 percent of your before-tax total -- but you must show your receipt to the host to participate. Since June 2017, we have raised $3,647 for the day center through fundraisers at Franklins!
Support Students with Finals Kits
now through Sunday December 12
We are collecting treats to support our student neighbors through this stressful time. Please bring donations to the church between now and December 12. Especially appreciated items are hot chocolate packets, individually wrapped tea bags, fruit snacks, assorted granola bars, peanut butter or cheese crackers, microwave popcorn and chewing gum. On Sunday, December 12, stay after worship to help pack the goodie bags for students. Thanks to Bonnie for organizing.
Donate Warm Gloves and Coats for PG Day Center Guests
now through January 1
The PG Plaza Day Center staff are seeking donations for the guests. They need warm gloves, preferably insulated, in generally large sizes. They also need warm coats, new or gently used, in large sizes. You may bring donations to Hope between now and January 1; a volunteer will ensure the donations get to the Day Center.
Gifts of Hope: alternative gift-giving
now through January 5
Jesus’ birth changed the world forever. This holiday season, we too can transform the lives of others through more meaningful giving. Donate through our Synod’s Gifts of Hope program and you will support local and global organizations with proven track records of helping those who need it most. These funds have helped the homeless, the hungry, the young, the elderly, immigrants, refugees, jobseekers, seminary and college students, and those seeking to improve their lives. Visit the Gifts of Hope table at Hope to pick up a catalogue or go to GiftsOfHopeDC.org to learn more. See Lori B for more information.
Afghan Refugee Support
supporting a family of 12 now!
Hope is welcoming and supporting a newly arrived family of 12 people - a married couple and their 10 children, ranging in age from 2-19 years old. Thanks to all of you who have helped the family get beds, sheets and pillows, a fully stocked kitchen, curtains, carseats for safe travel, and radios to let music into the home.
The next greatest needs are several warm coats and winter shoes (not quite everyone still needs these; reach out for specific size-details), cell phones and laptops, new or nearly new area rugs. Contact Mary directly if you want to be involved - mary.e.boyer@gmail.com or 202-509-7991.
You can continue to donate financially and invite others to do so too, You can send a check to Hope with "Refugee Resettlement" in the memo line. Or give online, selecting "Refugee Resettlement Fund" in the drop-down menu: https://hopecp.org/donate.html.
Hope's Council and Steering Committee continue to research, learn and guide Hope's property discernment process. Read updates on the process in a recent newsletter, found here. -------
