Dear Colleague,

November has centered around some of the most critical issues of our day: climate, nutrition, and democracy. We have engaged in and will continue to host spaces for provocative, solution-oriented dialogue!

Upcoming Summit for Democracy Official Side Event: All Democracy is Local

December 6, 10 - 11:30 am ET

A famous US politician once said, “All politics is local.” By this, he meant that the success of any political system depends on responding to local needs. Article 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights establishes that every person has a right to voice in the decisions that affect their lives – which requires active citizen participation in governance at the community level.

This side event will share the experience of both civil society and local government actors in working together to fulfill the promise of participatory local democracy.

Community Ownership Key to Good Nutrition

More than 95 activists for community-led nutrition action joined our Nutrition for Growth official side event to emphasize key community-led strategies and share three case studies. Good nutrition requires not only affordable access to nutritious food but also an entire local system of community-owned programs.

Our panelists, Luz Dania Velasquez, Alcance Nicaragua, Grace Chikowi, THP Malawi, Prof. Pierre Kayodé, and Prof. Nadia Fanou-Fogny, University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin, shared examples of community ownership to diversify diets in Nicaragua, an integrated approach to malnutrition in Malawi, and the power of partnering community wisdom with science and academia in Benin.

Community-led Adaptation for Climate Change

The Movement’s fifth Sector Dialogue, this time on climate, took place on November 29th.

Moderated by Bhumika Muchhala, Third World Network, with panelists Heather McGray, Climate Justice Resilience Fund and Emilia Reyes, Equidad de Género, this dialogue addressed centering community voices in climate discourse. Through provocative remarks by all three speakers, this event was truly a learning session on climate justice, local action, and decolonizing the climate sector.
