2021 CHAMPION OF HIGHER EDUCATION FOR EXCELLENCE IN TRANSFER

Riverside City College is proud to be among the leading California Community Colleges and California State University campuses in being honored as a 2021 Champion of Higher Education for Excellence in Transfer. The Campaign for College Opportunity recognized Riverside City College among just 12 California community colleges for working with intentionality to support community college students through the Associate Degree for Transfer.

"Increasing transfer rates is the result of hard work by members of our faculty and classified professional staff across the College," President Gregory Anderson said. “Our students know that they can reach their goals of transfer here at RCC”

RCC awarded 923 Associate Degrees for Transfer of its 3,985 associate degrees conferred. The ADT provides a streamlined pathway between California Community Colleges and the California State University (CSU) system.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Martin Zendejas

“Nursing has always been a passion and this passion is so strong that not even the COVID-19 pandemic could stop me from becoming a nurse," said Martin Zendejas. This second-year Nursing student hasn’t had the same classroom and clinical experience as students that preceded him, but he believes the training and education he has received has more than prepared him.

Understanding the risks, Zendejas didn't hesitate to answer the call, volunteering to work at both COVID-19 testing sites and vaccination clinics. "To help someone get the vaccine and then see them crying means a lot," he said.

“This pandemic has been bittersweet and difficult to experience, both as a Nursing student and American," Zendejas said. "However, it gave us a chance to accelerate or catapult our learning. We got a crash course on public health and public service.”

“We all grow in this program, individually, socially, and intellectually and you become a better person because of it," Zendejas said. "It’s been a great journey and now specifically in this moment when the world needs more nurses, I’m ready to enter the field and start my career.”

This newsletter will regularly spotlight students from among the thousands of inspirational stories we hear. If you know a student who should be highlighted, please share relevant information with Heidi Gonsier in the office of the president.

VIEWPOINTS BEATS ITS AWARD RECORD AT STATE JOURNALISM CONFERENCE

With 20 total awards, Riverside City College's student newspaper Viewpoints continued its winning ways in a virtual environment at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges California Fall Conference November 5-7.

The publication earned a meritorious nod in the online general excellence category for Viewpointsonline.org in the Southern California publication regional awards competition. This marks the 40th award in this category since 1996.

Winning entries -- stories, photos, illustrations and other multimedia content -- reflected student work from the Spring 2021 semester. On-the-spot contests enabled student journalists to pit their talent against counterparts in other California community colleges statewide.

APPROACH TO EMERGENCY RESPONSE

In the event of an emergency on campus, follow these three steps:
  1. Call 9-1-1
  2. Inform RCC Campus Police
  3. Call RCC Student Health & Psychological Services staff

Students may make appointments to see the nurse or counselor by calling
(951) 222-8151.

This approach is expedient, effective, and ensures safety for the student in need of care. EMS will be in route to provide care, determine the need, and provide appropriate transportation to a higher level of care.
