Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP is a leading international law firm with more than 900 lawyers in offices throughout the United States, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The Senior Communications Coordinator is a new and exciting opportunity to work closely with a team of marketing and C-Suite professionals who are passionate about boosting the visibility of Akin Gump and its U.S. attorneys across all of the firm’s practices. If you have exceptional writing skills, are exceedingly well-organized, can write a compelling story, and enjoy working with a collegial and collaborative team, then this position is for you. Although a background in crafting successful legal award submissions is certainly helpful, it isn’t a requirement: we are also interested in speaking with people who have experience drafting successful pitches and RFPs and have been looking to move their career into more of a communications-focused role. 

The position can reside in any of our U.S. offices and will play a leading role in the firm’s rankings, awards and directories strategy, working closely with and collaborating with marketing and business development colleagues, C-Suite individuals, other firm departments, lawyers and firm management. 

Key responsibilities of this position include: 
  • Working with the communications manager, play a key role in the strategic approach to firm’s awards, rankings and directories process, suggesting improvements to the strategy and ensuring alignment with firm priorities.
  • Lead the drafting, development, review and submission of a number of awards and accolades. This will include working with marketing department colleagues, C-Suite individuals and lawyers (including firm management; practice leaders; Pro Bono and Diversity Committees) throughout the firm to determine eligibility, developing content and editing submissions as needed.
  • Develop communication materials (press releases, internal messaging, social media postings, etc.) that promote successful results and enhance the visibility and positioning of the firm.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for the firm’s relationships with key legal directories and other rankings and awards organizations.
  • Lead the internal communication of the firm’s rankings, recognitions and awards results in support of the firm’s goals and branding both internally and externally. Report rankings and awards results to relevant lawyers and firm management. Answers questions regarding results and firm strategy.
  • Liaise with directory editorial staff and researchers to understand methodology and submission guidelines as well as other information specific to the opportunity, and use that information to maximize efficiency.
  • In concert with the communications coordinator, assume responsibility for monitoring, tracking and determining participation in an array of awards and rankings opportunities. Help oversee legal directory research calendars and submission and client reference deadlines.
  • Help manage relevant outside vendor relationships. 
Qualifications (Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities): 
  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a marketing or literature-related field
  • Three to five years of demonstrated increased responsibility in drafting and developing compelling submissions for business and industry-focused awards and accolades or successful pitches and RFPs
  • Prior legal industry experience is strongly preferred
  • Superior writing and editing skills, including demonstrated ability to synthesize information from disparate sources into a compelling narrative
  • Familiarity with the legal industry awards and directories environment, including processes and an understanding of how to develop successful submissions is preferred
  • Ability and willingness to build strong relationships and collaborate across Akin Gump’s global marketing and business development teams as well as its firmwide Business Services teams
  • Strong ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects effectively

Blank Rome, Communications Specialist

Blank Rome is looking for a Communications Specialist who will report to the Senior Communications Manager and provide comprehensive communications assistance to enhance the firm’s marketing, business development, and public relations initiatives. Responsible for helping to develop and manage internal and external communications content to increase the visibility of the firm’s practices and culture, support business strategies, and enhance the firm’s image and reputation among clients, employees, the legal industry, and local and national markets, while maintaining consistent standards of style and form in all written and verbal communications.

Primary responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

External Communications

  1. New Attorney Hires – drafting new hire associate bios and press releases, and managing the approvals and media promotions process with the appropriate attorneys and practice group leaders.

  2. Digital & Social Media – managing the firm’s social media platforms (i.e., LinkedIn and Twitter) to promote updates and breaking news items, under the direction and guidance of the Communications team. Training attorneys and members of the firm on social media strategies, as needed, as well as suggesting new initiatives to enhance followers and reader engagement. Assisting in the development and promotion of the firm’s digital media strategies, including but not limited to podcasts, in-house video series, and creative media campaigns to further enhance the firm’s various initiatives.

  3. Media Relations – coordinating closely with the Communications team to draft press releases and external promotions of notable firm and attorney announcements and achievements, as well as coordinating these promotional efforts across the firm’s internal communications, social media platforms, and Intranet to maximize coverage. Securing reprint permissions, as needed, with publications/vendors to promote content on the firm’s website. Maintaining the firm’s media master list and managing the firm’s media monitoring platform.

  4. Website Content – creating, managing, and modifying web content for the firm’s communications efforts (i.e., attorney biographies, media coverage, publications, and press releases), as well as marketing and business development initiatives (i.e., notable cases and transactions, speaking engagements, and events). In conjunction with the Senior Communications Manager and Communications Coordinator, serve as a web editor for all content utilizing the firm’s style guidelines (Chicago Manual of Style), and provide enhancements and suggestions based on industry trends.

  5. Communications Reporting – creating analytic reports as it relates to the firm’s media coverage and reach, content development, and social media performance.

Internal Communications

  1. Intranet – managing the firm’s Intranet highlights reel, promoting the firm’s internal and external initiatives and breaking news items.

  2. Communiques – assisting the Communications team in drafting content promoting the firm’s recent news and updates, such as client successes, HR initiatives, attorney and firm achievements, recent publications, new hires, and firm culture initiatives (i.e., diversity, equity, and inclusion, pro bono, and innovation).

  3. Copyediting – proofreading and editing content as needed.

Additional/MISC

  • Perform additional marketing/communications/BD activities, as needed.

  • Work closely with counterparts in BD, marketing technology, content, and other administrative teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2-3+ years of related experience in the field of communications or marketing. Previous law firm/legal marketing/professional services experience not required, but strongly preferred.

  • Intermediate to advanced writing and editing skills, with a strong attention to detail and an understanding of the multiple elements necessary to put together effective, cohesive content, under tight deadlines. Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style preferred.

  • Must submit 2-3 relevant writing samples for consideration.

  • Strong customer service orientation, proactive, commitment to meeting deadlines, and ability to assess priorities and multitask in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

  • Demonstrated communication skills and judgment, both written and verbal.

  • Able to work both independently and within a team, with a positive, “can-do” attitude.

  • Intermediate to advanced MS Office skills, digital and social media savviness, and familiarity with content management systems.

About the Role

The Marketing and Communications Coordinator will support the initiatives of the Marketing Department, working in close coordination with the Director of Marketing & Communications and the Marketing team.   • Conduct research of prospective targets, industries, markets, competition and conflicts via firm-wide resources, online databases, and utilization of library resources
  • Experience management: oversee and implement the deal summary process of drafting, securing approvals from partners and posting website descriptions of the firm’s corporate matters, as well as litigation wins. Maintain and regularly update relevant targeted experience lists.
  • Assist with marketing content strategy and execution, including updating website and social media content.  Maintain marketing materials including practice profiles, attorney profiles, leave-behinds and more.
  • Support rollout of CRM system and creation of targeted mailing lists.
  • Coordinate the preparation of pitches, proposals, presentations and other client-facing materials, utilizing existing content and, when needed, creating new content.
  • Proactively track marketing and business development activities
  • Support other Marketing team and firm initiatives as directed, and support marketing and business development efforts with general administrative tasks as necessary.
  • Provide back-up services to the team on projects/tasks on an as-needed basis.
Qualifications
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat skills required. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite a plus.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, corporate finance work (capital markets, mergers and acquisitions) a plus.
  • Familiarity with accepted research techniques and databases typically used for competitive intelligence in a professional services company.
