President Message

Greetings from WAHA. Winter is here although I think many are wondering where the snow is. WAHA wishes everyone a great holiday season.

Congratulations to all of those who have competed at the end of the season. Whether it was US Nationals, our Fall Open Show or anywhere in-between. Please send photos and any story you would like featured to Karissa Held at diamond.arabians@gmail.com. We love sharing stories of our members.

We had our annual Fall Colors Open Show at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn.  Thank you to our judge Joann Ace-Schraufnagel for helping make our show a success. A huge thank you goes out to our volunteer show committee who put in lots of hours of time to make the show come together. Our open show committee is already hard at work looking at what our show season will look like next year.

Our Annual meeting will once again be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022 at 7pm. With concerns for large gatherings indoors the WAHA Board made the decision to host it virtually again this year. The evening will have a year in review, our election for our open board member positions, a vote on bylaw changes and our annual awards presentation. Please plan to join us from the comfort of your own home. We do plan have a membership meeting at our annual show in July.

We are looking forward to our annual WAHA August show next year which will be in July at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds July 30-31, 2022 (pending all approvals). This show will be two jam packed days of traditional pleasure classes, Sport Horse Classes, Dressage and more. Stay tuned for more details on this show.

As we approach 2022 we are looking forward to another great year.

Sincerely,

Jessica Dillingham
WAHA President

2022 Changes to Arabian Horse Association Qualifications
Submitted by Nyssa Sheridan

Did you know AHA has changed qualification rules for 2022? While 2020 and 2021 saw a season with no qualifications for regional and national events, there now have been new qualification rules put in place for 2022.

There no longer is the counting of points or the requirements for a first or second place to qualify for regionals.

Many of the classes now require participation at one AHA qualifying show, which includes USEF approved events and AHA value shows. The horse must complete a class in the division and then the horse qualifies for regionals at all eligible classes within that division. As with previous years, in order for a horse and rider to show in amateur to ride or drive classes, the horse must be qualified with an amateur.

A large number of classes also require either a top five at regionals or participation in three AHA qualifying shows to qualify for Nationals.

The best document to reference while planning the 2022 season is the PDF released by AHA.
https://www.arabianhorses.org/export/content.export/aha-docs/AHA_Approved_Qualifications.pdf

Classes have been split into categories. A large number of classes are in category one and are subject to the qualification rules listed directly below them. This screenshot is of category two classes, including trail, sport horse under saddle, and park horse. The qualification rules governing category two classes are listed right below these classes with the red arrow pointing at the regional qualification guidelines.

As an example, a hypothetical park horse entered and competed at one AHA qualifying show with an amateur in the ATR park horse class and successfully completed the class, the horse would be eligible for as many regionals in that division, so that horse could compete in region 10, region 11, and region 13 in park horse open and/or amateur classes or even junior horse classes if the horse was a junior horse.

Category III and IV include specialty classes with no qualifications and category five discusses dressage and western dressage and how they can either qualify at AHA events or at open qualifying events.

For riders interested in leveling classes (ie select, choice, elite classes), there is a new AHA document available here.
https://www.arabianhorses.org/export/content.export/aha-docs/Achievement_Leveling_101.pdf

Another reference to closely look over is AHA’s qualification page which has links to other documents explaining co-ownership rules, equitation qualifications, and some town hall recordings discussing the new qualifications.

The best way to be prepared for the show ring is to plan everything out ahead of time! Happy showing!

Virtual Education Opportunity: View AHA's Judging Seminar Resources
Did you know that you can view AHA's videos from the judge's seminar for free? Each of the topics above features a video presentation regarding class specifications and important points of emphasis for each division.  These videos are great opportunities to study for judging, brush up on the rules of your division, or learn about a new discipline.  View the videos at ArabianHorses.org - Resources.
