"17-year old Lily Shǒu has a plan for getting off her rotten colony planet home: she's going to win a scholarship to a core-systems university by dominating her high school science fair. Sure, she's planning to cheat, but she's not going to feel bad about getting revenge on the jerky kids who have made fun of her prosthetic hand for years. Unfortunately, one of the ill-advised experiments at the fair breeds a Xenomorph rat swarm, which summons a young blood Predator, and things get a lot worse before it gets better. The only thing more dangerous than two killer aliens is a teenage girl with a grudge."

"Habeas Codex" published in Fireside

In Case You Missed It, <<First Name>>: my final short story publication of 2021 is now FREE to read online! And I absolutely adore the accompanying illustration by Trevor Fraley (click through to embiggen):

This is the latest installment of what I've been calling "the Jake and Andy mysteries," featuring two police detectives dealing with all sorts of weird crimes in near-future New York. I started writing these characters back when I was doing my weekly flash fiction project, and I'm super chuffed that their more in-depth adventures are making it out to the wider world of genre fiction.

If you enjoy "Habeas Codex," please consider subscribing to Fireside--just $5 gets you a new ebook full of great stuff every month!

MOAR FREE FICS

I'm continuing to migrate my content from the sadly defunct Curious Fictions to my own website, and two more shorts are now available to read:

Meanwhile, on YouTube, Realm (formerly Serial Box) has been posting some of their older shows for listening:

  • I'm still quite chuffed with Ninth Step Murders Season 1 | Episode 3 - "The Fallen Executive," my first writing credit on that series and a reasonably airtight locked-room mystery, if I do say so myself.
  • I didn't work on Ctrl-Alt-Destroy but I know several of the writers on that team and it's narrated by Summer Glau, so.
  • I also didn't work on Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, but again, I'm a big fan of the whole writing team (each of them individually and all of them as a unit), it's narrated by Tatiana freakin' Maslany, and IT'S ORPHAN BLACK DUDE C'MON.

Last but not least, if you're looking for more stuff to listen to, I can recommend two audiobooks I've enjoyed this month: You Can't Be Serious by Kal Penn, narrated by the author; and Patient Zero by Lydia Kang & Nate Pedersen, narrated by Hillary Huber. Check your local public library, or buy from Libro.fm and support your local independent bookstore!
