On 5 December we celebrate International Volunteer Day. Every day dedicated volunteers inspire others and the theme Volunteer now for our common future highlights by working together we can all take action to help build a better, safer and more inclusive future. We also acknowledge International Day of People with Disability today which aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and the importance of volunteering in breaking down barriers.

Thank you for your ongoing support, we enjoy working with you to advance volunteering. We wish you a safe and festive season and hope 2022 brings you success with new opportunities and possibilities.

NT VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR 

In a first, an individual and a volunteer-run organisation were named joint winners in the NT Volunteer of the Year Awards. NT Volunteer of the Year winners were Di Tynan, Bushfires NT and the Nepalese Association of the Northern Territory. The Awards presentation was held in Darwin on 11 November and streamed live for Central Australia. Congratulations to all the winners.

INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER DAY

#IVD2021 on 5 December encourages, recognises and promotes volunteering as an important part of creating a more equal and inclusive future for communities. An online volunteer Certificate of Appreciation is available as a way for organisations to show their appreciation. Volunteering SA&NT acknowledges the 70,000 volunteers in the NT.

The NT Government has a vision where Territorians of all abilities are able to live life to their fullest potential and have access to quality services. The NT Disability Strategy will be a whole of government plan to achieve this vision and The Department of Territory Families, Housing and Communities invites comments and ideas on the development of the first three year Action Plan.

Through the new Volunteer Management Activity (VMA), Volunteering NT aims to build the capacity of volunteer involving organisations in the NT with continuous improvement strategies. To understand the current climate of volunteer involvement, a series of surveys and focus groups will be conducted, with data used to develop resources including training opportunities.
