Virtual Wellness Weeks
SENECA

Seneca's Virtual Wellness Week became quite the well-oiled machine the last two semesters, and was a jam packed week put together to support the Seneca Community during a busy time of the year. It brings the College’s service areas together/in-house experts to show-case a wealth of Wellness knowledge, right at your doorstep!

The theme was Bee Your Best Self”…
Monday – “Bee-Efficient” – focus on service area programs to help with productivity/habits
Tuesday – “Bee-Nutritious but Delicious” – focus on a balanced diet
Wednesday – “Bee-Grateful” – focus on living with a grateful heart & its benefits
Thursday – “Bee-Connected” – focus on connecting to your creative side
Friday – “Bee-in-Motion” – focus on finding joy in movement

A few standouts for the week:
  • Involving our Fitness & Health Promotions program
    • Student Wellness Chat – Instagram
    • “Joy in Movement” segment to incorporate FHP curriculum
  • Waterblessing/Fall Welcome with First Peoples @ Seneca –IG
  • Aramark Canada’s segment on “Let’s Talk about Snacks”
  • Involving the Independent Music Production program
    • IG live with IMP student on how music is part of her self-care
  • Incorporated the OCR initiative “Move for Mental Health” on Friday’s “bee-in-motion” day.  Was a great way to tie in a mental health/movement program into our Wellness Week – was a perfect fit!  :D

Minds In Motion Campaign
GEORGE BROWN

Minds in Motion
The George Brown Athletics and Recreation department has put a focus on collaborating with other departments within the college to establish more engagement by providing cross information. We partnered with the GBC Counselling and Student Well-Being department to emphasize mental health in the month of November. We know physical, mental, and social well-being are closely linked.  Throughout the month, there will be posts on the @GBCRecreation Instagram page highlighting these aspects.

An example is the Gratitude for Better Mental and Physical Health. We shared a gratitude exercise, “Write down 5 things in your life that you are grateful for”.  The students who participate are entered for a chance to win some Husky apparel by posting a photo of what they are grateful for on Instagram, tag @GBCRecreation, and use the hashtag #GBCMindsinMotion.

Campus Updates
CENTENNIAL

Centennial opened our Fitness Centers in September and began our booking system on gocoltsrec.ca where students and staff are able to book their gym sessions ahead of time. We have received only positive feedback from our survey in regards to the booking process and how user friendly it is. All four campuses are getting consistent traffic even with a majority of the programs being online. Participants who enter the facility receive campus recreation swag such as hand sanitizer and branded reusable masks.

Our online programming include: Feel good Friday’s, Wellness Wednesday’s and our weekly live variety of fitness classes on our Instagram page. We were also a part of our Alumni Homecoming event where we offered Fitness On Demand accounts to those who registered and gave out a total of $100 worth of gift cards to participants of the Colts then and now trivia. Fitness On Demand is an online platform where participants can be a part of various group fitness classes.

Upcoming events we plan on executing are below:
  • Give Me A Break Series: Happens every other Thursday to provides a 45 minute break for staff and faculty members to get active and get moving.
  • Know Your Colts Series: For student to get to know our Varsity Team and Campus Recreation Team. This will be posted on our social media account
  • Anti-Racism and Allyship in Sport Seminar for Student Athletes –  A session for student athletes that educates and makes a meaningful impact in our Centennial Colts community!
RECREATION PROGRAMMING
HUMBER NORTH

Virtual programs that we've run this semester:
Tuesday Trivia (variety of topics: Intro to Athletics & Recreation Services, Tokyo Olympics, Sweets & Treats, etc.)
Among Us (online strategy game)
Drawasaurus (online Pictionary-type game)

At the beginning of the year, we hosted outdoor drop-in sports including Ultimate Frisbee, Flag Football, Cricket and Lawn Games. Capacity limits kept the group small, but the smaller group actually provided a better opportunity for students to engage with one another on the sidelines. Many students returned to the field weekly to participate. After the Thanksgiving break, we were able to open up to indoor drop in sports including Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton.
The OCR Committee would like to host one ROUND TABLE CHECK-IN each semester to facilitate ongoing resource sharing, success highlights and opportunities to network for creative expansion. The first one we held in the Fall was AMAZING and we're excited to host another at the end of the year as a final check-in!
