COVID-19 and Flu Vaccinations for Pregnant Women

As COVID-19 infection fates and hospitalisations of pregnant women continue to rise, it is more important than ever that all healthcare workers, including GPs, Midwives, Obstetricians, Pharmacists and others continue to build vaccine confidence and make every contact count across both the flu and COVID-19 vaccination programmes.
This means recommending both COVID-19 and flu vaccination and providing evidence based advice and support to women on the benefits of them and their babies; as well as information on the risks of not being vaccinated.
This also means encouraging all double-vaccinated women to take up the offer of a booster as soon as they are called forward.
For the latest bite-sized advice for use with women, please see the UKHSA leaflet for all women of childbearing age, pregnant or breastfeeding and the RCOG/RCM information leaflet and decision aid.

New annual figures on Maternity Services released
The latest annual report outlining maternity activity in English NHS hospitals during 2020-21 was published by NHS Digital on 25th November 2021.
NHS Maternity Statistics, England, 2020-21 brings together detailed information from the Maternity Services Dataset (MSDS) on activity carried out by Maternity Services relating to a mother and baby(s) and the Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) database on hospital care received before, during and after delivery.
The report provides information from the MSDS on a range of measures reported at a mother’s booking appointment, as well as information on the labour and delivery along with babies’ demographics, diagnoses, and screening tests.
The report includes a new interactive dashboard, allowing you to explore key annual measures at a regional and organisational level.

The Digital Maternity Fund
The Digital Maternity Fund closed on 14th November and we were delighted to receive around 140 bids from across England.  A lot of thought and effort went into the bids and we thank all those who applied and acknowledge the tight turnaround time in which applicants had to apply.
The Programme Team are currently working through the bids with Regional Digital Leads and applicants will be notified if they have been successful or not on or before 24th December.

Independent review of the function and funding of Maternity Voices Partnerships
A national review of the role and expectations of MVPs is underway.  The review will include how MVPs function and the arrangements for remuneration and the reimbursement of expenses for service users.
The review is being led by SQW who are experienced researchers and leading the review on behalf of NHSEI.  The review will include exploring how parents with babies receiving neonatal care can give feedback.  SQW are keen to engage with service users involved in their local MVP, providers and commissioners, along with regional colleagues and the VCSE sector and will be in touch in due course.
The review will inform much needed guidance for how MVPs can be organised and funded to ensure they function effectively to gather local feedback from parents and contribute to coproduction of local services.

How can the Insight and Feedback Team support you to use free text feedback for improvement?
The Insight and Feedback Team at NHSEI want to know how they can help the NHS make more and better use of qualitative (free text) patient experience data to support service improvement.
To do this, they need to know how data is collected and used currently, and what need there is for support, training, resources and so on.
If you are interested in having your voice heard, you can participate in a short interview.  Participation is voluntary, and responses will be anonymous.
If you are interested please contact Josie Harrison on josie@solutions-research.co.uk.

Bliss animation for parents to understand RSV
Bliss, the charity for babies born premature or sick, have created an animation for parents to understand when their baby has more than a cold, and the steps they can take to seek medical support to help protect their baby: https://youtu.be/7m476AjzYFg.
The animation has been made in consultation with families of vulnerable babies, with a particular focus on families affected by health inequality. This involvement from parents has helped ensure the animation is accessible and informative.
There are subtitled versions of the animation available in Bengali, Gujrati, Polish and Urdu, and for more information on RSV you can view information in your language at www.bliss.org.uk/RSV
Bliss hope this animation will be widely seen to ensure parents know how best to manage and treat RSV over these critical winter months so please share.
