Seventy Original Fashion Drawings [Circa mid-1950s]

Fashion Drawings

Original artwork. Each measuring approximately 7" x 10". Gouache on stiff paper. Fine. A collection of 70 full-color drawings of women’s summer apparel and swim wear from an unknown 1950s fashion designer likely used for either reference during production or for use in a catalog. The majority of the images consist of the sketched outlines of women with their garments painted; most in great detail with stripes, fabric textures, and the popular step-and-repeat motifs of the times, such as sail boats, flowers, fish, etc. The clothing styles and one particular design featuring flags suggest a European fashion house, possibly in Austria or Monaco. A number of the drawings include background details, some in color, and one example is fully painted. Of additional note is an illustration of a woman modeling an early bikini and another showing a man in a two-piece swimsuit. All the paintings are skillfully done, though slight variations in style suggests they may have been created by more than one artist. A beautiful collection of original, full-color fashion illustrations from mid-20th Century Europe.

Offered by Between the Covers Rare Books and found in "Catalog 250: Women."

(OPTICAL VIEW.) Gustus. Le Goût. Il Gusto. Der Geschmack.

On Banquets

Augusburg: Georg Balthasar Probst, c.1780. Framed: 48cm x 58cm; unframed: 35cm x 49cm.

A beautiful and fine optical print representing “Taste” as one of the five senses. Optical prints, sometimes called perspective prints, were used both for unaided viewing, as well as in conjunction with a viewing machine such as the zograscope, or the more fanciful perspective boxes and peepshows. Sometimes the prints were also transformed through pinpricking and backlighting. Our print has the classic elements of a zograscope print: the title at the top is in reverse (to then appear correctly when reflected in the zograscope mirror and seen by the viewer). At the bottom, the title is spelled out in four different languages (these prints were traded throughout Europe). These words are written from left to right so that they could be viewed by the person setting up the zograscope for the viewer, and for the audience standing around watching the entertainment, but not actually viewing at the lense. Such prints were very popular throughout Europe and the United States and were a means for people to know about exotic places, as well as foreign news and events. During the 18th century, zograscopes were used by traveling showmen performing on the street, as well as wealthy households who used it as a form of parlor entertainment. In very good condition with fine contemporary coloring.

Offered by Ben Kinmont, Bookseller and found in "On Banquets and the Art of the Table, 1581-2006."

Our Country's Flag

Philadelphia: G. Andre & Co., [1861?]. Sheet music. Folio, 10.5" x 13.75". 5, [1 blank] pp, folded [pp.3-4 loose]. Attractive color lithograph on title leaf of young soldier in military camp holding an American flag, signed in type, 'J. Queen Del. & Lith; P.S. Duval & Son Lith. Philada.' At head of title: '10th Edition.' Light edge wear, light scattered foxing. Poetry and music by G. Gumpert with piano arrangement by F. Losse. Words in English with German translation. First line reads, "Beneath the Stars and Stripes there stand Our sons so nobly brave." Very Good. One of several songs published in 1861 "extolling the American flag," this one by Gumpert [Leepson, Flag: An American Biography, page 108-109]. Printings of this popular work by other publishers also issued during the Civil War. Gustave Edward Gumpert [1835-1882] was born in Germany to Walter H. and Fanny Gumpert. The family immigrated to the United States in 1856; Gustave's father started a cigar business in Philadelphia; Gustave and his brothers ran it after Walter’s 1861 death. Gustave became connected with the Lincoln family during the Civil War and developed a close friendship with son Tad. President Lincoln appointed Gustave as Treasury Agent about 1864, a position he filled for two years before accepting a job as Revenue Collector for the port of Philadelphia. Gustave's friendship with Tad survived long after the President's death. [Gumpert, G. (1955). Tad Lincoln and Gus Gumpert. Cappaulis

Scuol, J. Not Gadina 1770. 8vo. 173, [1]p. PRINTED MUSIC THROUGHOUT. Contemporary mottled half-calf and BROKATPAPIER covered boards (rubbed). Only Edition of this ROMANSH VERSE TRANSLATION OF THE APOCALYPSE OF JOHN IN TWENTY-TWO CHANTS ACCOMPANIED BY MUSICAL SCORES for a three-voice choir. The melodies for the tenor and descant face each other in verso-recto openings, while the bass appears beneath them on both pages. Following the verse Apocalypse are Romansh renderings of Christ’s words on the cross, prayers for a devastating local fire in April 1764, and a Judgment Day meditations — a last minute addition barely squeezed onto the last leaf in a much smaller type. The linguistic identity of Romansh was deeply intertwined with the protestant faith in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, the region in which this book was printed. Romansh has been a national language of Switzerland since 1938. The brocade paper sheet features a gunman, a rider with sword-drawn, a gentleman presenting a flower and a ?dancer. I have found two copies of the present work in the U.S. In good condition (scattered light foxing, rear flyleaf torn). ¶RISM, Einzeldrucke CC 917 II,1; Collins, Attempt at a Catalogue of the Library of the Late Prince L.-L. MORRIS, Rev. F.O. A History of British Birds.

Ornithology

London: George Bell & Sons, 1870. 4to. 6 volumes. (vii), xii, 303 pp.; (i), iv, 283 pp.; (i), iv, 272 pp; (i), iv, 225 pp.; (i), iv, 247 pp.; (i), iv, 264 pp. plus 8 pages of publisher’s ads dated 1877 at the end of each volume. Original green decorated cloth with gilt title on spine and a different gilt bird on each cover. Pages crisp and clean, stunning colored plates throughout; an attractive set in excellent condition.

Second edition of this impressive set of ornithology history. Morris writes, “The several objects had in view in these volumes have been – First, to collect together, a far as I could, all the known facts respecting the Natural History of each and every British bird, so that my work might contain a greater number of such facts than any previous one. Secondly, to produce at the same time a readable book. Thirdly, to give correct and life-like figures of the several species. And fourthly, to bring out the work at such a price as to place it within the reach of every class, whose taste might happily lead them to the study of Natural History,” (page v).

Morris (1810-1893) paved the path for activists as a cofounder of the Plumage League, a movement to protect birds from the plume trade (the use of feathers in fashion) and was a staunch conservationist. He also deemed his work on natural science an extension of his religious work, believing God wanted him to study and understand ornithology and entomology. Morris was famously anti-Darwin, publishing many pamphlets arguing against Origin.

Mary Emma "Daisy" Spaight. Manuscript diary of consul's daughter during her education in Hanover.

Dear Diary

Hannover, Germany: 1897. Black cloth over boards with tape label to front board. Spine perished and boards soiled; but internally tight and intact. Comprised of 193 pages (measuring 6.75 x 8") in the single hand of fifteen year old Daisy Spaight (1882-1955), daughter of U.S. Vice-Consul Dr. James Spaight and Esther Frances nee Babcock. Documenting a key year in her evolution toward adulthood, Daisy's diary contains a majority of entries in English, several in German, and one in Chinese; it also contains three pages of taped in photos and ephemera, five handwritten samples of musical notation and two original sketches. In all, it is a fascinating and unique look into turnof-the-century adolescence shaped by heightened access to education, travel, language, and music. "If by chance I should lose this book And you by chance should find it - Remember Daisy is my name And Spaight comes behind it. Black is the raven. Black is the rook. But blacker still is the wicked cow Who steals this book." So begins the diary of a young woman raised in a diplomatic family, spending a year in Hanover to study German, French, and music. As much as she asserts her own identity in the preliminaries, she is also trying throughout to define herself. Daisy is a performer of cultured adult femininity. A US citizen born in Demerara, she enjoys telling people about her global upbringing and keeps track of how many languages (and how well) her acquaintances speak. She records attending performances of Goethe and Chopin. She makes reading lists. She pays close attention to her attire, noting "in the evening I had on my new red dress - it looked lovely" (30 January) and reporting on shopping trips. She slips in and out of English in her entries like the most cosmopolitan of people. Yet, we also get constant reminders that Daisy is still a child in many ways. In one episode, for example, when she and a friend want to show a new photo to a young man of their acquaintance, Raoul, she is first exuberant and then thrown into shock when "He came to the [hotel room] door to fetch it in shirt sleeves, his braces hanging and his trousers open. I looked away quickly but we saw him quite well" (8 February). Daisy's diary presents scholars with multiple directions for study, including but not limited to education of Americans in Europe, the history of girls' education, the 19th century rise of travel and tourism, the history of adolescence and adolescent development, language, paleography, music and music performance, courtship and etiquette, clothing and fashion, the history of global politics, and genealogy.

Offered by Whitmore Rare Books and found in "Dear Diary: Women's Manuscripts 1877-1938."
