A Letter from Outgoing LHNA & CW President Alex Fergus

It has been such a pleasure serving on the neighborhood association board these past five years and wrapping up this year as your president. I will always be so proud of us coming together and petitioning for traffic improvements this year; the four way stops at Casa Loma/West Shore and Casa Loma/Tucker have already made a huge difference, and still to come are speed bump installations on Loving and West Shore and wheel-chair accessible sidewalks and crosswalks at the four way stops. I am also very thankful every morning that we got 4 extra seconds added to the green light leaving the neighborhood on West Shore and Gaston. Starting morning carpool with fewer expletives has been great for my whole family.

But, by far my favorite thing we accomplished the last 5 years was starting the Crime Watch Program in 2018. We are 75% funded for 2022, so if you haven’t renewed yet in the past month, please do so now here. Otherwise, we will have to reduce our hours per week. See below for more details.

The board is in excellent shape for next year! I am thrilled to have Aeron Brown taking over as neighborhood association president; Aeron has lived in the neighborhood for several years and is very familiar with our events and needs. Brandi Askenase is new to the board as Vice President, but she has been involved in events all year so this title is long overdue. I’m equally thrilled to have Jonathan Kopf taking over Crime Watch presidency. Jon has been my VP this year, and he is also responsible for delivering every single yard sign to you all over the past month. This will be a seamless transition. We are also welcoming Brett Meulmester to the board as VP of crime watch and know he’s going to be a fantastic addition.

Returning to the board are the other amazing people below and we appreciate each one of them: Rosanne Smythe - please notice how many times her name appears; and Jeff Benson, Donna Coker, Allison Biel and Rhoni Golden- all four of which have been serving for years and make most of the behind-the-scenes operations turn.

Our immediate remaining needs are help with this newsletter and/or help with marketing events on Facebook/Instagram. We are also looking for a new Crime Watch secretary, so if you are passionate about the program and want to help (this is not a traditional “note taking” role- could especially use marketing/membership support), please reply to this email and I can tell you more.

Holiday Lights Contest & Tour Sunday, December 12 @ 4 p.m.

No matter which holiday(s) you and your family are celebrating this December (or even if you don't celebrate any at all!), you are welcome at the LHNA Holiday Lights Contest & Tour.

If you would like to provide a treat for "tourists" participating in the second annual Holiday Lights Tour, you may sign up here as a Treat House. Your treat could be as simple as a doughnut, gingerbread cookie, or a peppermint candy. You could also sign up as a Treat House if you'd like to host caroling or a ukulele sing along! The goal of this event is simply to enjoy the lights and share a bit of fun with neighbors!

Don't forget to wear visible walking gear!

See you soon! Sparkle on, Lakewood Hills!
LHNA & Crime Watch Sign-up Reminder

Thanks to so many of you for renewing your LHNA and Crime Watch memberships for 2022!

The good news is we have 140 households signed up for Crime Watch, totaling $30K raised. That is no small feat or small amount of money, so thank you for being a part of keeping our patrol hours going.

The bad news is $40K is fully funded, so we need 40-50 more households to be set for 2022. This gives us 4 shifts (4 hours each) per week, which has been our level for the past 3 years. The Crime Watch Program is funded enough to continue next year, but we will have to reduce hours later in the year if we don't raise this final $10K.

So, we need your help! Please:

  1. Sign up if you haven’t, and remind your neighbors to do the same. If you aren't sure if you or someone in your household has done it in the past month, you may email crimewatch@lakewoodhills.org and we will check the list.
  2. Consider any businesses that you may own, be associated with, or know of that would be willing to be a sponsor. Sponsors get a logo on the website and on all marketing materials such as the below:) Thanks!

Ladies Cookie Exchange – Sunday, December 19 @ 3 p.m.

This month we are bringing back our Holiday Tradition of the Ladies Cookie Exchange! Join us on Sunday, December 19 from 3-5 p.m. at the home of Gwen Lopez at 7046 La Vista. Weather permitting, this will be an indoor/outdoor event.

Bring 3 - 4 dozen of your favorite treats to share - cookies, pretzels, bars, slices of cake, anything at all. They can be sweet or savory; home baked or from your favorite store; a family recipe or something you have never made before - all are welcome. You are also encouraged to bring a bottle of your favorite beverage and copies of your recipe to share.

Everyone will get to take a sampling of goodies home so you may want to bring an empty container to fill. This event is designed for adults only (unless you need to bring along an infant).  You will be a hero at home when you return loaded down with goodies!  Feel free to contact Donna Coker with any questions. See you there!

Many thanks to our 2021 Crime Watch Business Sponsors!

Jim Scott & Sons, Dr. Kyle Stuart of Sports Medicine Clinic of North Texas, and Dr. Terry K Gemas of Lakewood Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine.
