Smiley Big Ben design wins MP's Christmas card competition

A design featuring a smiley face on the clock of Big Ben has been chosen as the image for Epping Forest MP Dame Eleanor Laing's Christmas card this year.

Dozens of entries from local schools were received on the theme of 'Big Ben at Christmas'.

The winning entry, chosen by the judges, was created by Staples Road Primary School pupil Eloise Munday who received her prize from Dame Eleanor at the school on Friday.

Dame Eleanor said: "It was great to receive so many lovely designs but Eloise's picture with a smiley face on Big Ben stood out from all the others."

Some 1,000 Christmas cards featuring Eloise's picture have been printed with Loughton-based accountants Haslers sponsoring the competition by making a donation to the Chigwell Riding Trust charity.

Competition runners-up were: Eleanor (Year 5, Epping Primary School), Florence (year 3, Daiglen School, Buckhurst Hill), Jacob (Year 2, High Beech Primary School), Alicia (Year 4, Oaklands School, Loughton), Amelia (Year 6 (Theydon Bois Primary School) and Damiana (Year 6, Braeside School, Buckhurst Hill).

WALTHAM ABBEY: Decision awaited over any Next plc appeal against decision to refuse permission for distribution centre

High street retailer Next has until the end of the month to lodge an appeal to challenge Epping Forest District Council's decision to refuse permission for a distribution centre on the edge of Waltham Abbey.

District councillors met in private session on Thursday to agree next steps, should Next plc submit an appeal against the decision which was made earlier this year.

In a statement issued last night (Thursday), the council said: "The Next planning application for Dowding Way, Waltham Abbey, was a major planning application refused by the council.

"Councillors received further legal advice and agreed their strategy for defending the decision, should Next submit an appeal."

Any planning applicant has a right of appeal when a council refuses a planning application.

Appeals are held before an independent government-appointed planning inspector.

Next plc must confirm in December whether it intends to appeal, the council added.

Everything Epping Forest has submitted three requests to Next requesting a statement on its position with regards to any appeal decision.

LOUGHTON: Man convicted over double fatal road crash

A man will be sentenced next month after being convicted over the death of two people in a road crash near Loughton more than two years ago.

Two teenagers who were passengers in the BMW have been left with life-changing injuries.

Whilst on routine patrol in the early hours of Saturday, August 24, 2019, police officers discovered a silver BMW M3 that Kane Faulkner-Wild had been driving which had left the road and hit a tree in Goldings Hill, just off the Wake Arms roundabout.

Front seat passenger Sophia Khan, 16, and 21-year-old Max Halcrow, both from Loughton, were both fatally injured.

Upon impact, a 16-year-old girl, sitting in the rear, was thrown from the car.

The passenger sitting behind the driver’s seat – a 17-year-old girl - was trapped.

Both were taken to a London hospital after sustaining life-changing injuries.

Faulkner-Wild was found walking away from the driver’s door, with only minor injuries.

He denied driving the vehicle after a night out drinking.

Following a thorough and sensitive investigation by Serious Collision Investigation Unit, Faulkner-Wild, of St Johns Road, Epping, was charged with a number of offences.

He denied all charges when he appeared at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court on December 12 last year.

During his trial at Chelmsford Crown Court the jury heard how investigating officers calculated the car was travelling far in excess of the 40mph speed limit when it crashed and that Faulkner-Wild’s blood alcohol level showed he was above the drink driving limit.

Yesterday (December 1), the jury found Kane Faulkner-Wild, now aged 23, guilty of two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and two counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

He is due to be sentenced next month.

Detective Sergeant Sam Nason said: “The deaths of Sophia Khan and Max Halcrow were tragic and completely preventable. Two other young people were left with serious life-changing injuries.

“Kane Faulkner-Wild should not have got behind the wheel that night after he knew that he had been drinking and wasn’t safe to do so.

“Despite denying his involvement in causing the collision, the jury heard that our investigation proved he was the driver and fully responsible.

“Two families will now live with the knowledge that their daughter and son were taken too soon.”

The result of the trial came on the same day that Essex Police launched its Christmas anti-drink and drug driving campaign.

Speaking at the start of the campaign, Adam Pipe, Head of Roads Policing, said: “Alcohol and driving doesn’t mix.

“The consequences of drink driving can be life-changing – it could lead to you losing your licence, your career, your home. Or worse, it could cost you or someone else their life.

“It won’t just affect you; it will affect your partner, your parents and your children.

“Imagine the face of your child on Christmas morning as they open their present, but you’re not there.

“Your presence means the world to them, why wouldn’t you want to be there for them?”

NORTH WEALD: Parish council planning "landmark" tree planting project

North Weald Bassett Parish Council is looking to create a woodland area featuring between 2,000 and 4,000 trees at Weald Common.

Parish council chairman Alan Buckley told Tuesday's environmental committee the project would be the biggest tree planting initiative carried out in the district.

He said: "We are making a landmark move."

The parish council has the idea of linking the planting scheme with next year's Queen's Platinum Jubilee - with each local school child allocated a tree, possibly bearing their name.

Each child would be given a certificate with every tree plotted on a commemorative map.

Councillor Andy Tyler said: "This is probably the best thing this parish council could do for generations."

The council hopes to receive grant funding through the Essex Tree Initiative, and also provide some funding itself, to meet the cost of the project which would see the trees planted on a 2.09-hectare area of land off the access road which leads from the North Weald Village Hall car park to the former Ongar Radio Station site.

Councillor Tyler added: "It's a great way engaging with the school.

"I think it's a brilliant idea and would be a great way to engage the children at the school about what trees they would like to see planted there."

The committee agreed to move forward with the idea.
