If you are like me, you are tired of dangerous - often repeat - criminals being let out of jail on no or low cash bail prior to trial. While the Waukesha parade massacre might have highlighted the issue, I’ve been working to reform our bail system for the last several years.
 
Last week, Representative Cindy Duchow and I unveiled a proposal to give judges more flexibility when setting cash bail. It’s an issue we’ve been working on for four years. You can read more about it here, here and here.
 
Most people don’t know that our bail system is governed by the Wisconsin Constitution and that judges are only allowed to consider “flight risk” when setting cash bail. Many judges use that excuse when setting bail.
 
Enough is enough. I don’t want people sitting in jail for no reason, but I also don’t want dangerous criminals out on the street on a low bail.
 
We need to fix this. Unfortunately, amending the constitution is the only way.
