A Halloween Surprise

This Halloween, Asian Media Access got a surprising trick-or-treat incident – an Anti-Asian graffiti message spray painted on their Minneapolis Office's backdoor with the words – “no candy, virus.”  After 2 years of trying to right the false narrative of Asians = Virus, such xenophobic sentiments still remains, although we can’t say we were surprised.

As an increasing number of people of Asian heritages in Minnesota, and more broadly, in many other parts of the U.S. have reported experiencing racism over the past year as COVID-19 virus spread across the world.  Many continuously report hate crimes and verbal abuse towards Asian Americans. Because COVID-19 was unknown to the public until the outbreak in Wuhan, China, some Americans feel justified in spreading xenophobic messages that blame Asian-identifying people for this deadly virus.  There had been 9,081 anti-Asian incidents reported since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, according to a report published on August 12, 2021 by the nonprofit coalition Stop AAPI Hate. Racist acts range from people being coughed on and spat on, refused services, vandalisms, verbal harassment and physical assault. There were also high-profile cases where videos captured elderlies being shoved, punched, kicked, and some of died from those injuries.  The “Asians = Virus” xenophobia has spread widely, many become violence incidents toward AAPIs.

These incidents have complicated the vaccine mobilization effort and trust toward government to provide services to Asian Pacific Minnesotans. We need to become allies for each other and to show we will stand with each other in solidarity to rebuild the trust. Project HEALINGS was created for that reason.

Project HEALINGs is a coalition of BIPOC community-based agencies that supports culturally and linguistically appropriate vaccination mobilization efforts in Minnesota - showing the solidarity, showing the power of grass-root organizing.

Currently, Minnesota has become the state with the highest COVID-19 infection rate in the nation.

Asian Media Access invites all to join us and support the vaccine mobilization effort at all corners of Minnesota with culturally and linguistically appropriate process. The intent is to ease the double pandemic burden of impacted AAPIs, so they can communicate using their preferred languages and trusted messengers, especially at a time when they are already vulnerable.

Joining our Asian Pacific Minnesotan Business Resiliency Network!!!!

Asian Media Access (AMA) has teamed up with Chinese American Chamber of Commerce - MN (CACC-MN) and MN Hmong Chamber of Commerce to enhance the connections and recovery effort for MN Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI)small businesses.
Photo Courtesy: St. Paul Pioneer Press
COVID-19 has heavily impacted AAPI small businesses, many of which are businesses that have struggled financially due to slowdowns. The pandemic has particularly affected AAPI restaurants through a combination of government-mandated lockdown, reduced business traffic, and also racial stigma due to misconceptions about COVID-19.  Some restaurants have laid off staff due to the financial strains, and limited their business to take-out and delivery only; other restaurants have tried to reopen in accordance with health guidelines, including taking measures of social distancing and mask-wearing.  Some of the worst-hit restaurants reported losing 95% of their business and staff, even after 2 years, still not fully recovered.

Additionally the riots in both City of Minneapolis and St. Paul have severely impacted many Asian American small businesses, few were burnt down and these businesses have faced a triple crisis - Pandemic, Anti-Asian hate and Riot disturbance.  AMA has teamed up with CACC- MN and Minnesotan Hmong Chamber to serve as communication intermediary to develop a Resiliency Network as an information and resource hub, with below approaches:

1) Approach #1: Reaching to the AAPI small businesses through equity and justice lens.  We cannot just discuss about the urgency of the pandemic recovery, we have to support our members to openly discuss the Anti-Asian hate, health disparities and unfair impacts on our communities because of the system racism and historical traumas, in order to create resiliency, it will serve as a communication bridge across cultural/racial lines, to mitigate racial tensions, to illustrate the cross-cultural experience, and eventually decrease the distrust toward establishments, and increase people’s willingness to chip in to support ALL.

2) Approach #2:  Reaching to hard-to-reach AAPI mom-pop small businesses. Often the government data-driven approach fails to support mom-and-pop shops who may not have financial documents ready but desperately need support to recover.

We hope to design a human-centered model, along with innovative solutions through Asian Pacific Minnesotan Business Resiliency Network.

3) Approach #3: Bicultural Healthy Living Framework – Empowering AAPI small business owners to ask questions and seek resources without shame that they have to "ASK HELP" for recovery. We seek a balance that creates community-based resources and collaborations that are built upon a foundation of cultural practices and pedagogy that are integrated with, but not diminished by, Western philosophies.

Such engagement encourages asking questions during the process, such as how we can integrate cultural strengths and resiliency into bicultural solutions for reducing Asian business closure.

With such equity approach in mind, we like to invite all allies to join the Asian Business Resiliency Network, and support a solid recovery effort for AAPI small businesses.

Youth Spotlight: Jackie Ong

Jackie Ong discovered Asian Media Access through a friend who just completed an AMA internship program. Jackie signed up for the new monthly youth discussions that recently kicked off in late October 2021. The Youth Discussions encourages participants to be advocates for various social issues. The sessions promote learning, understanding, and engaging with others with related backgrounds by providing open space to have in-depth personal discussions with peers. This program aligns with similar values of BASE, a social justice organization that Jackie Co-founded at her high school. Building Awareness Surrounding Equity (BASE) is an organization with a mission to achieve higher standards of equity, actively educate ourselves and others about anti-racism, and ensure everyone feels represented and appreciated in the community.

Jackie has joined the first two sessions featuring the topics COVID-19 Vaccination and Mental health. Jackie says, “AMA has provided me with the opportunity to talk and learn with my peers. Though I don't know the people on the other side of the camera, I feel like we can all connect through open dialogue and shared feelings”. These virtual sessions are an opportunity to speak more intimately with peers in an open setting, even though many of the youths do not know each other, they are around the same age range and share a similar life dynamics. In these sessions, Jackie continually shares great perspectives and connections to the discussion. In the COVID-19 session, Jackie shared insight that the US provides incentives to promote, encourage, and reward individuals for getting vaccinated, meanwhile, other countries are desperately seeking for vaccinations. We are happy to have Jackie join AMA's youth discussions and voice her advocacy on healthy behaviors and practices.
Jackie also came in second place in the Kahoot game for our COVID-19 discussion!

As a current high school senior, Jackie is interested in majoring in Biomedical Engineering or Neuroscience as premed in college. In the future, Jackie hopes to become a psychiatrist as she has seen firsthand how treatments and care affect both a patient and their family.
