Internment Camps Presentation at Former Governors' Mansion State Historic Site

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to "History of Japanese Internment Camps," a free presentation by Perry Hornbacher on Thursday, Dec. 9, at 7 p.m. at the Former Governors’ Mansion. The Former Governors' Mansion is located at the corner of Fourth Street and Avenue B in Bismarck.

On March 29, 1942, under an executive order signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the forced evacuation and detention of West Coast residents of Japanese-American ancestry began. The internment forced relocation and incarceration of over 120,000 Japanese, 60,000 of whom were American citizens.

Hornbacher is a professor of history at Bismarck State College. He will present a second program, "Fort Lincoln Internment Camp," on Jan. 13 at 7 p.m., focusing on the role of Fort Lincoln Internment Camp as a detention center for Japanese-Americans.

The Former Governors’ Mansion is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota. Admission is free.
