Bomber’s Early Ski Season Dinner and Lessons, Sat., Dec. 11

by Bill Kornrumpf

Walt Kangas and I are organizing a group Saturday dinner at the Clubhouse. The dinner will be prepared by Walt’s cousin Earl Lahna who has been cooking for crowds at the Clubhouse for many years now. The price is $10 per person. To sign up for dinner, you will need to email Walt (waltkangas@gmail.com) and me (wkornrum@nycap.rr.com) to tell us if you will be eating with us and how many people are in your group.

All-day group lessons are available at Stowe on Saturday, 12/11, for $95. We will have our own dedicated instructors. Please call, text, or email Bill by 12/5 to participate (518-209-3244 / wkornrum@nycap.rr.com).

A Howling Good Time

by Ellen Bidell

We hosted some friends for Halloween weekend at the SWC lodge, and it was a fantastic time. They are all relatively new members, so we showed them the ropes on what to do when you stay at the house without a host.On our way up to Stowe, we took one of John's many shortcuts, this time past Stone Corral in the Richmond area. The menu is pub food with a twist, and we will definitely go hungry next time to give it a try. The beers are also unique, and we took home XX Chocolate Maple Porter, Mexican Chocolate Mousse Cake, Strawberry Rhubarb Gose and Black Beer.

We got to decorating right away and transformed the fireplace room and dining room into a festive party atmosphere. The weather cooperated and we were able to fit in our 11-mile bike ride on the Stowe Recreation Path, followed by a cider tasting at Cold Hollow Tasting Room. The rest of the weekend was cold and rainy, so we visited some of the area shops -- Smugglers Notch Distillery, Dedalus Wine Market (which has an amazing selection of wines AND cheeses, plus a little bakery counter) and the Woodstock Farmers Market (good stop for snacks for the lodge).

We had quite a few people, so we ordered the "Buy the Farm" from Prohibition Pig--which included pulled pork, brisket, ribs, wings and sides--and brought it back to the house. I even got to try my first Hot Toddy to warm up! Back at the lodge, we spent the evening playing games by the fire, baking Halloween cookies and carving pumpkins (check out the SWC Facebook page for more photos).

The lodge is a great place to meet up with friends you haven't seen in a while. If you haven't ever stayed at the lodge (or it's been a while) and would like some "in person" instruction, send me an email at ebidell@yahoo.com and we will try to put something together.

February Break: It's Not as Far Off as You Think!

by Ellen Bidell

February break is scheduled for February 18 to February 27. John and I will host part of the week, and Bill and Karen Simmons will host the rest. Both weekends will include dinners and activities for the kids (weekdays you are on your own). Because there will be children there, all adults will have to be fully vaccinated. Any children who are not yet vaccinated can present a negative test prior to their arrival.

There are three rooms set up for families (Rm. 11, 25 and 26/27). Several other rooms have multiple twin beds to accommodate smaller families. Adults are $37.50 pp/night, and children under 17 are free. Dinners will cost $10 per adult and $5 per child.

We already have some reservations, so don't wait!

Put SWC on Your Gift List

Are you not quite ready to return to the SWC lodge? Consider gifting the lodge the equivalent of a one-night stay (or two) for the holidays. We had to get very creative to keep the house going for the past 20 months, but still need your help. You can make a donation on the SWC website - just click the donation button. Sorry, but gifts are not tax deductible.

What Are You Waiting For?

The snow has started falling in Stowe, and while they will be opening a little later this year, it won’t be long. Don’t delay renewing your membership until you are ready to stay at the lodge. Renew today on SWCweb.org.

Minutes from SWC Board Meeting, 11/9/21 via Zoom

by Karen Simmons, SWC Secretary

In attendance were: John Bidell, Ellen Bidell, John Rack, Don Streed, Ed Greiner, Sue Knapik, Bill Kornrumpf, Bill Simmons and Karen Simmons

TREASURER’S REPORT - The full report was provided to all board members for review prior to the meeting. Don was pleased with the positive balance for the month, which included expenses for the work weekend. Ellen has sent reminder letters to members who have not yet renewed for this year.

HOUSE RENTALS - There is some interest in individual rentals and there is a family rental for Thanksgiving. The Bidell and Simmons families will be hosting during February break.

NYS CAPITAL DISTRICT SKI COUNCIL - Karen reported that the ski council is sponsoring a raffle for two $1,000 gift certificates from High Adventure Ski Shop in Latham. The drawing will take place on Wednesday, November 18, 2021. The Council is distributing stickers to be affixed to the back of each member card. The sticker will demonstrate eligibility for Council discount days. Karen recently contacted Bolton Valley to research discount options for the upcoming ski season. There are no single-day visit discounts. There is group pricing for 20+: $39 weekdays full day (9a-5p), $49 (9a-10p), $75 weekend (9a-5p), $85 (9a-10p). The group tickets must be purchased with one payment and ordered at least 7 days in advance. Overall, the replies from all mountains contacted have not resulted in discounts like we had in the past.

WARREN MILLER - There was no opportunity for the Warren Miller movie to be a fund raiser this year and John’s contact with a rep indicated that going forward there is little option that the Company will return to its former ticketing procedure.

PADDLERS - Ed reported that the paddling season has ended and was a successful one. Don reaffirmed that insurance for the paddlers is in place which had been a previous discussion.

HIKERS - John reported that a hike will take place on Thanksgiving morning 8:30-10:00 at Christman’s Preserve, 3281 Schoharie Turnpike, Delanson, NY 12053. All members are encouraged to enjoy this Nature Preserve.

CROSS COUNTRY - Sue has spent time at Landis Arboretum in Esperance where there are snow shoe days during the winter season. She wondered about a winter SWC day there, as well as a possible weekend at the lodge.

SWC CLUBHOUSE - Bill reported a very successful work weekend was held in October. A large number of tasks were completed by those in attendance with time for a bike ride included. One of the unplanned projects turned out to be that 2 of 3 sump pumps were not working. Bill was able to repair one and will purchase another one to protect the Clubhouse from flooding.

The meeting was adjourned with the next one scheduled for Tuesday, 12/14.
