Our scripture text for Sunday is 2 Samuel 7:1–28.
The following reflection is provided to aid you in preparation for worship this Sunday...
“This is how God showed His love: He sent His one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him.”
1 John 4:9
On Sunday, we will continue our celebration of Advent. On these four Sundays leading up to Christmas, we will rejoice in the great gift that is ours in Jesus Christ. To help us celebrate, we will be lighting the candles of the Advent wreath. The candles signify that Jesus is the light of the world. The evergreens remind us that He is life and brings life to us. All these are arranged in a circle because life in Christ has no end.
On the second Sunday of Advent, we will light the second candle, which represents love and reminds us of Bethlehem and how Christ came in humility—to an ordinary place, in a stable of animals, among an ordinary people. This is a time to remember how Christ fully identifies with humanity in the incarnation. How great is the love the Father has lavished on us! A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. All men will know that you are my disciples if you love one another. (John 13:34-35)
Prayer: Blessed Lord, who has caused all the Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning, grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which You have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
