WA Councils in landmark agreement to buy green power

More than 40 West Australian Councils have signed up to move to 100% renewable energy.

Switch your thinking has been working with some of our our partner Councils to participate in a landmark agreement with Synergy which has been taken up by 48 Local Governments, 43 of which plan to go to 100% renewable at the contract commencement in April, with the remainder to transition over three years.

Developed by the WA Local Government Association (WALGA) the agreement sources all renewable energy locally from wind farms at Albany and Emu Downs and Collgar wind farm.

WALGA Acting President Cr Karen Chappel said the initial three-year agreement for an estimated $85 million and involving 48 WA Local Governments eclipses a similar project by 46 Victorian Councils.

“There was overwhelming enthusiasm from Local Governments to shift to renewable energy which has been driven by the attitudes and ambitions of their communities,” Cr Chappel said.

“That so many Councils have decided to immediately take up the 100% renewable option is outstanding and shows that the sector is leading the way".

A big congratulations to the Switch your thinking Councils who are participating in this project, the Cities of Armadale, Bayswater, Canning, Gosnells, Kalamunda, Kwinana, Melville, South Perth, Stirling, Swan, Vincent and Wanneroo. the Towns of Bassendean, Cambridge, Victoria Park and the Shires Mundaring and Serpentine-Jarrahdale,

Changing Your World conference

Where aspiration, innovation and inspiration come together for a sustainable future!

The biennial Changing Your World Conference will be hosted by the City of Canning on 11th May 2022 for the second time (pioneered in 2020). The conference will be a showcase of innovation in the broader sustainability space, connecting community, innovators, industry, research and government, building ideas and celebrating successes.

The Conference day provides opportunities for key stakeholders (government practitioners, sustainability researchers and innovators) to network, learn about new and emerging sustainability and impact management trends, innovations and technologies, as well as co-create solutions to shared sustainability challenges for local government and the community.

This event caters for school aged children and will expand to include an entrepreneurial program for older youth (16-24) for the first time.

The City of Canning is seeking applications from individuals, local governments, community groups, social enterprises and businesses with skills and experience in sustainable technology and cutting edge or emerging innovations in the sustainability space to be involved.
