SPOTLIGHT on

AMENEH ARABI

by Jynene Black | Alaska INBRE Reporting & Outreach Coordinator
Ameneh Arabi is an INBRE funded GRA in the lab of Dr. Max Kullberg at UAA.  She studies the “Development of MUC1 cancer immunotherapy using complement targeted liposome.” Ameneh completed her undergraduate and master’s work at Payam Noor University in Iran.  After completing her master’s degree, she held a research position at the University of Pavia in Italy.

Ameneh describes herself as a fast learner who is very curious about her environment.  In addition, she is a diligent, open-minded person who tries to learn and implement new learnings to achieve goals in life. Dr. Kullberg said, “Ameneh has become an extremely independent and effective researcher in the field of nanoparticle cancer research.  Not only has she mastered these techniques, but she has shown the ability to instruct others, mentoring multiple students from the postdoctoral to an undergraduate level so that they are proficient at helping with her experiments. In addition, Ameneh has become a highly valued lab member with her impressive preliminary results.”

Outdoor adventures were Ameneh’s hobbies from childhood. She loves to practice ice-skating in Alaska, and she enjoys camping and photography. Read our interview with Ameneh below.
INBRE:  When did you know you wanted to be a scientist?
Since I was a freshman at the university, I knew my destiny was to be a scientist. Every time I was in the lab, I could feel the attraction and desire to learn new lab techniques. My instructor also encouraged me to advance in science and played an essential role in my research.

INBRE:  What is your current research?
I am working on a new delivery system for MUC1 peptide, a proven anti-cancer drug. Our goal is to enhance the efficiency and decrease the side effects of MUC1 peptide. We have encapsulated MUC1 and three adjuvants (R848, CPG, MPLA) inside liposomes to attain these goals.

INBRE:   How did you end up in Dr. Kullberg’s lab?
I worked on nanotubes in Dr. Passini’s lab in Italy and met Dr. Kullberg at a conference.  Dr. Kullberg described his work using nanoparticles to deliver
cancer treatments.  I was interested in his research and received the opportunity to work under his supervision in 2019.

INBRE:  Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I can imagine myself as an academic researcher who also teaches. I have extensive teaching experience and broad knowledge in multiple research fields.  I would love to share my knowledge with the next generation of scientists.

INBRE:  Can you tell me how INBRE has impacted you?
INBRE is a well-known organization that supports young researchers and helps them to satisfy their research desire. By participating in the INBRE workshops, conferences, and seminars, I have gained crucial knowledge about scientific research, grant writing, and project management. Meanwhile, INBRE financially supports my research and helps me to focus on my study to achieve my research goals.
