2021 in Review
From trackways to platforms, the Metro Line Northwest (NW) LRT extension from NAIT to Blatchford is starting to take shape above ground. While last season was about laying the groundwork, this year crews have made significant progress on the LRT infrastructure.

As we approach the end of construction season, here’s a look at some of the work completed this year.
2021 Construction
Construction is underway on two new LRT stations in Blatchford: the NAIT/Blatchford Market Station and Blatchford Gate. This year, crews completed the station foundations, erected the structural steel that will hold the station canopies and installed the precast platform panels.
Work is also progressing on the utility complexes that will house the equipment that powers the LRT system. Crews are working to complete the building enclosures so they can work indoors during the winter. Once complete, this building will feature LED-backlit glass panels, making it a prominent feature in the new NAIT/Blatchford Market plaza.
Here’s a bird’s eye view of the work underway on the concrete trackway. The trackway work is expected to be completed in 2022 and rail installation will follow. The Metro Line NW extension will be a high-floor style of train (the same style as the existing Metro Line and Capital Line), with “urban” LRT design features, including embedded rail in certain roadways, to help it fit into communities.
What's Next?
In 2022, crews will start laying tracks and continue building the two LRT stations. The Metro Line NW LRT extension to Blatchford is expected to open in 2025.

Ultimately, the Metro Line Northwest LRT will extend all the way to St. Albert city limits, improving mobility and access to existing and new neighbourhoods in the north and northwest areas of the city.
