Birds who will be distributed amongst local butchers at a large live market in Delhi.
S. Chakrabarti / We Animals Media

We have big investigations underway in Asia and Canada right now. While we can’t share all of them with you yet (for the security of our team and integrity of the investigation), we can share what we’ve just completed in Delhi. Our photojournalist S. Chakrabarti visited one of the largest live markets in India, documenting chickens and fish kept and killed in harsh conditions.

You can find this visual collection from India on our stock platform, free as always for non-commercial use.

Gifting HIDDEN

An open page of HIDDEN
HIDDEN / We Animals Media

HIDDEN makes a remarkable gift. Not for everyone – it’s an emotional book of unflinching photography and searing commentary. But for those who love photography, animals or thought-provoking and historic books, HIDDEN becomes a cherished artifact. It is the seminal book on animal photojournalism, and it is moving.

Awarded Outstanding Book of the Year (IPPY) and Photography Book of the Year (POY), HIDDEN: Animals in the Anthropocene is unlike anything someone will receive this holiday.

Turkeys, Tofurky, and Thanksgiving

Tofurky founder Seth Tibbott and rescued turkeys enjoy a meal at Wildwood Farm Sanctuary & Preserve.
Jo-Anne McArthur / We Animals Media

Something to be grateful for this American Thanksgiving are the innovators who make it easy to leave turkeys off the table. Last month Jo-Anne visited Tofurky, headquartered in Oregon, to document the processes and people behind the food. Best known for its Thanksgiving alternatives, Tofurky has become vast, selling food in 25 countries.

Our latest feature in NowThis details why turkeys should remain off the table, and our latest Tofurky content shows one of the many innovators helping to achieve that ambition.

We recently launched a fundraising campaign with a matching grant of $5K. We’ve had very generous donors, including LinkGraph and Caroline Grübel, match in full and we're now almost at $25K! Help us get there? All the funds go into more field work and more animal stories.

For a donation of $100 or more, choose between one of these four lovely photos taken by Jo-Anne. Get two prints for donating $180+, three for $240+ or all four for $280 or more.

British Columbia Bans Mink Farming

A silver mink, caged at a fur farm in British Columbia.
Jo-Anne McArthur / #MakeFurHistory / We Animals Media

“A permanent ban on breeding mink [and] on live mink on farms by April 2023; all operations ceasing completely... by 2025.”

This is the British Columbian government’s decision on mink farms after multiple COVID-19 outbreaks. They maintain the ban is purely for public health, although some mink farmers are adamant that activists played a significant role persuading the government. We have documented these farms and they are grim places that continue to exist elsewhere in Canada, the US, Europe and Asia – for now.
