Make a Year-End Impact
Please consider the Santa Barbara Public Library Foundation in your year-end giving!

Through your generous support, you help our Library reach new heights!
This year you helped the 30,000 children served by Library outreach annually, expanded funding to provide thousands of books for the Library’s annual community reads program SB Reads, sent our Library On the Go Van to neighborhoods across Santa Barbara, and launched our Library Plaza Campaign!

With your help, the Library will continue to meet the life-long learning needs of Santa Barbara!

THANK YOU to our generous sponsors for supporting SB Reads 2021. Your investment helped support SB Reads, made this year's author visits possible, and reinforces our vision of opening doors to a 21st-century Library.

We Made the Giving List!
We made it! Honored to be included in this year’s edition of the Giving List.

“Santa Barbara is The Giving List’s birthplace, yet even in this tight-knit community, our friends and neighbors who wanted to give back often did not know where to begin. So, we decided to help. Nonprofits build the fabric that binds our communities together, and we think it’s due time they were celebrated.”

We Open Doors to...Popular Picks at SBPL for 2021
Every month we continue to bring you suggested books to inspire your next read! Recommendations are brought to you by Santa Barbara Public Library librarian Molly Wetta.

These titles were some of the most checked-out books of 2021 by SBPL library patrons. I’ve long thought that what’s circulating the most at the library reflects what’s circulating in people’s thoughts at a given time. It’s clear that the pandemic and changing ideas about what we value are both common themes our community has been contemplating this year.
Hamnet: A Story of the Plague
by Maggie O’Farrell

The LA Times said of this moving novel of the death of Shakepeare’s son just as his play Hamlet is to take the stage: “In Hamnet, art imitates life not to co-opt reality, but to help us bear it.”
Klara and the Sun
by Kazuo Ishiguro

The Book Prize committee summed up this contemplative novel best: “What stays with you is the haunting narrative voice—a genuinely innocent, egoless perspective on the strange behavior of humans obsessed and wounded by power, status and fear.”
How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy
by Jenny Odell

I was surprised to see this top the list of most checked-out nonfiction, despite how often I’ve recommended it to friends. Though this book came out in 2019, it has really resonated with a lot of people who are changing their expectations about how they spend their time and energy.
The Premonition: A Pandemic Story
by Michael Lewis

Popular nonfiction author Lewis’ latest book is a thriller about the people who pushed through misinformation and bad policy to do heroic work during the pandemic.

Note from Lauren Trujillo, Foundation Director
Public libraries are deeply embedded in our community in ways that enrich the wellbeing of local residents. Through core services, programming, and partnerships with other organizations, they catalyze broader networks of support that meet a diverse range of needs for individuals, organizations, and their broader communities.
