Habitat Restoration at Skinner Butte

Last month, with funding from the 2018 Parks and Recreation Bond, we planted approximately 300 new understory shrubs, trees and ferns at Skinner Butte.

Since 2017, Skinner Butte has been the focus of large fuels reduction projects removing thickets of invasive, woody plant material that could have served as fuel in the event of wildfire.

These new plantings will restore some native plant diversity to the area without risk of growing into the same dangerous thickets that we recently removed.

Species planted include: vine maple, red-flowering currant, oceanspray, serviceberry, mock orange, Big leaf maple, Madrone, chokecherry, Oregon grape, rose, snowberry, sword fern and sedges.

Between Two Hundred Ferns

In November, our newest park adoption group, Eugene Mountain Bike Stewards, made major progress on building the first dedicated mountain bike trail in the Ridgeline Trail system.

Members spent Sunday salvaging hundreds of native sword fern and Oregon grape from the approved trail path.

These plants are now headed to Spencer Butte where they will replace invasive blackberry bushes recently removed.

Join the Eugene Mountain Bike Stewards Facebook group for information about future trail building events.

Pre's Rock Closed for Construction

Prefontaine Memorial Park is temporarily closed for safety improvements through December.

Planned renovations include an expanded sidewalk and viewing area. These improvements will provide safer places for visitors to stand, sit and place personal items that are a regular feature of this memorial site.

During construction, we ask that you do not leave any new memorabilia. Anything present at the start of construction will be carefully stored and replaced upon reopening.

Trees for the Future

Join City of Eugene, Friends of Gilbert Park and the greater Bethel community for a morning of planting trees. Tools will be provided. RSVPs and face coverings required.

This event is part of a series of tree planting events focused on the Bethel neighborhood, which has lower tree canopy coverage than more affluent parts of Eugene (TreeEquityScore.org).

With a smaller tree canopy, Bethel is more susceptible to the heat island effects of climate change resulting in hotter temperatures and negative health outcomes.
