FDA Issues Its Most Serious Warning for Xeljanz

Is there a Xeljanz recall on the horizon? Xeljanz (tofacitinib) is a drug used to treat adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) who did not respond well to the medicine methotrexate. In RA, the body attacks its own joints — causing pain, swelling and loss of function. Xeljanz also has been approved for the treatment of psoriatic arthritis, a long-term inflammatory arthritis occurring in people affected by psoriasis, as well as for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, a chronic, inflammatory disease affecting the colon.

Pfizer — the manufacturer of Xeljanz — conducted safety clinical trials on the drug, which showed an increased risk of blood clots and death in patients taking Xeljanz. The clinical trials also showed an increased risk of malignancy, particularly lymphomas and lung cancers, in patients taking Xeljanz compared with patients treated with TNF blockers. Higher rates of lung cancer and overall cancer were also observed in current or past smokers taking Xeljanz.

After the clinical trial, the FDA issued a “black box” warning for Xeljanz. Found on the package insert for prescription drugs, a black box warning is the FDA’s most serious advisory — issued when a drug causes potentially serious adverse reactions that could lead to hospitalization and death.

If you or a loved one took Xeljanz or Xeljanz XR and experienced serious side effects or complications, you may be eligible for compensation. Conditions may include:
  • Heart-related conditions like heart attack and stroke
  • Blood clots, including pulmonary embolisms, deep vein thrombosis and arterial thrombosis
  • Lymphoma or lung cancer
  • Death
Patients injured after taking Xeljanz or Xeljanz XR — or the families of those injured — should seek legal advice. Medical bills do add up quickly. Our team of Personal Injury attorneys can help guide you through the process to obtain the compensation you deserve. Contact us anytime at 877.526.3457 or online at jandils.com. Your first consultation is always free.
