Survey Summary

Kudos:  Many of you love Walden, we received comments such as “We love the way Walden is run and the community of skiers and staff, Love the trails and staff, Grooming is amazing, Megan had fun activities, great kids program and coaches, Walden Nordic is a fantastic club, love the seasonal rentals and love the new website.

Some Suggestions:

MOST IMPORTANT:  Please, please drive slowly in the neighbourhood.

Trails: People would like more trails and some leveling off of trails so they can be opened earlier.

We had a fantastic group of volunteers this summer and fall.  They have been working hard to improve the trails.  All trails have been brushed, had troublesome trees cut down to make things easier for the groomer, and have had rocks removed to make things smoother.  The 3km trail has had extensive work done to make it accessible earlier in the season and during low snowfall.

We would love to have more trails.  We are always thinking about how this could be accomplished, but any trail additions are a huge undertaking and financially challenging.  We will continue to consider options.

Programs: People would like a scheduled social ski and greater access to rental equipment.

We will designate Wednesdays at 2:30pm for a social ski on the lower trails, meet 1 of our staff and enjoy skiing with a group.  Stay tuned for details.

During the pandemic we required more time to prepare and sanitize equipment as well as keep people spread out.  This year we should be able to return to regular hours and more regular service.  We will continue to follow Health Unit guidelines and advice.

Facilities: People would like better lighting in the parking lot and more destinations on the trails.

Lighting will be better this year.  Lights have been fixed and are being installed around the garage area.

We are putting out new benches and bird feeders on the trails as well as some picnic tables.  We also have a new fire pit on the 1km trail.

****We will continue to consider all your suggestions and make adjustments as needed.****

SHOVEL BRIGADE

We’re forming a new crew to help with trail maintenance, once the snow arrives. Our two responsibilities will be to keep access open to the benches and new picnic tables along the trails if we get a lot of snow, and to help touch up thin and bare spots if we don’t. In the past, this work has been done by our groomers, especially before races and later in the season as the sun gets to exposed sections of the tracks. With our help, they can be freed up to do what they do best – grooming. We want to keep our trails
the best-maintained in the area! This won’t be a large commitment of our time: our hope is to have about a dozen volunteers on call to attend to these occasional tasks, individually or in small groups.

Coach, Marlee

The Walden Nordic Racers have been putting in weekly dryland training sessions to get ready for the winter season. High school cross country running season also just wrapped up. Many athletes on our team competed at OFSAA XC championships. A huge congratulations goes to Lauren Pineau who placed 6th out of a field of 160 girls! A few of our athletes who are on the Ontario Junior Ski Team and Ontario Development Team are currently in Morin Heights, Quebec for a week long training camp. The majority of the team will be headed to Timiskaming Nordic in early December for a training camp and their first race of the season!
