City Works Eatery & Pour House
As one of the first restaurants in the King of Prussia Town Center located a short drive from our home, we have visited this restaurant numerous times. Originating out of Chicago, the City Works Eatery and Pour House restaurant opened in December 2016 and serves pub fare and entrees with a selection of ninety draft beers.
College friends Jason Akemann and Nathan Hilding started with a successful neighborhood bar business in Chicago’s Wrigleyville in 2002. Based on the success of this first endeavor, they added additional partners, growing the business to three Chicago area establishments under the Bottleneck Management business umbrella. In 2012 the addition of an Executive Chef to the team led to the development of a food menu centered on American classic offerings with coincident growth of craft beer schedule of ninety tapped varieties. Growth continued over the years to numerous locations under different monikers in the Chicago area leading to the creation of the first City Works in Minneapolis in 2016. Nine City Works locations across the country (IL, PA, TX, FL, MA) complemented the other operating Bottleneck management restaurants, bringing the current total to eighteen establishments (City Works {9}, Old Town Pourhouse {4}, Chicago’s South Branch Tavern Grille and Sweetwater Tavern and Grille, Wintergarden (Pittsburgh) and several Secret Sauce ghost kitchens operating out of the restaurants.
The main space features large screen TV’s showing live sports events over the long bar that shares a space with the large high ceiling dining room. A supplemental outdoor seating area is also available (seasonal and weather permitting). It has become so popular that weekend reservations need to be secured in advance (a Tuesday OpenTable inquiry found no Friday or Saturday openings during prime dining hours).

...the rest of Ron's column
Menu selections cover the typical pub fare – “Bar Bites and Shareables” includes Fried Pickles, Popcorn Chicken, Chili, Buffalo Chicken Dip, Queso Dip, Smoked Chicken Wings, Buffalo Shrimp and Duck Nachos. A variety of salads with and without protein adds (BBQ Chicken, Ahi Tuna, Shrimp) are offered in entrée portions. Handhelds available include choices of Burgers, Pulled Pork Sandwich, Filet Mignon Sliders, Nashville Hot Chicken Wrap, and Fried or Grilled Chicken Sandwiches.
Larger plates offered include tacos (Chicken Tinga, Fish (Mahi Mahi), Poke style Ahi Tuna) as well as a Bone-In Pork Chop, Pan Seared Salmon, Smoked BBQ Ribs, Smoked Cheddar Mac N’ Cheese, Smoked BBQ Platter (Baby Back Ribs, Grilled Chili Rubbed Wings and Drummies, Pulled Pork, Louisiana Hot Link), Rigatoni with Sausage, Fish N’ Chips, and Alaskan Cod. Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten Sensitive choices are also available.
Beer selections cover all brew styles – Lagers, Darker Golden, Ales and Browns, Belgians, Wheat, IPA’s, Stouts and Porters, Seltzers, Fruit based and Sours (and more!) and are supplemented by Mules, Cocktails, and a choice of eight tap wines. I selected a Sly Fox Helles Golden Lager and Yards Brawler and DW Sherri chose a Lost Coast Brewery (CA) Tangerine Wheat (one of her favorites) and a Tröegs Dreamweaver.
We chose our “go-to” Fried Cheese Curd appetizer to start the meal – pillowy puffs of cornmeal breaded White Cheddar gently fried until golden brown and presented at the table in a wire frying basket accompanied by a Smoked Tomato dipping sauce. The curds were not greasy and sturdy enough to be handled without squashing the contents when dipping or biting.
For our main plates, I chose a City Burger with lettuce, tomato, and onion served with French Fries and DW Sherri chose a Buttermilk Battered Fried Chicken Sandwich with a Carolina Mustard BBQ sauce. The City Works burger was good and delivered with a light surface char, ordered medium but done slightly more than desired, nevertheless a decent preparation. The Chicken Sandwich was a well-cooked large chicken breast on a Brioche bun with Pickles. Service was pleasant and attentive, and we received our food with appropriate timing.
Reservations are usually required for prime dining hours. Brunch is offered on Sundays and reservations can be secured on OpenTable. The entrepreneurs that grew the business out of Chicago have expanded operations across the US and our experience was a demonstration of their successful business philosophy. If you enjoy a variety of draft beers with good food in an upscale Sports Bar environment, City Works is worthy of a visit.
