Santa to visit Bonnie Doon!

We've booked Santa's sleigh & reindeer (wagon & horses :-) for Sunday afternoon, December 12. We plan a Grand Tour of Bonnie Doon, stopping at several locations to give treats to young ones and to allow opportunities for parents to photograph their kids with Santa.

We need your help to make this happen:
  • We need a volunteer Santa
  • We need a costume for Santa.
Please reply to this email if you enjoy the adoration of young children, enough to wear a red suit and a beard! Or, if you have a Santa outfit you can lend.

We'll post a map of Santa's route, closer to the event.

Friday evening cheer

Drop by the Rink Shack, Friday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 and enjoy a warm fire and hot chocolate. December 3, 10, 17 and 24 (well, maybe not 24; we'll ask our volunteers!).

We hope you'll bring your skates. Certainly the weather will soon turn cold enough for us to unlock the rink! (When the ice is too soft to skate on, we lock the gates)

To skate, you'll need to show your skate tags. They're medium grey this winter. You get your tags by buying a membership, which helps us pay for water and power. A family membership costs $20, individual $10. Runs September 1 to August 31. Thanks!

Making ice in the fall

Despite warm temperatures in November, volunteers Morgan & Dan have made good progress with our rink, 9240 93 Street. This photograph shows the rink on November 28.

Return of in person programs?

We had great hopes that fall would see the return of yoga, our preschool playgroup, pot lucks, etc. We painted hall interior walls, shook our piggy bank and ..., had to put the brakes back on.

We're playing this month-by-month, keeping a watchful eye on the COVID numbers and on the omicron news. Please stay in touch via these newsletters and our social media feeds, listed near the bottom of this email.
Neighbourhood News

A tiny rink

Earlier in November we floated the idea of creating a Tiny Rink in the pocket park at 88 Street and 90 Ave. It would be like a backyard rink. There would be no boards, thus discouraging hockey. This would make it inviting for young families new skaters. The idea is posted here.

We've learned that BDCL's liability insurance does not cover this kind of initiative. If local families want to try to make a rink there, we would look for ways to help. Reply to this email to engage!

Your idea for the neighbourhood

Do you have an idea for a neighbourhood enhancing project that needs a small budget? Edmonton's Neighbourhood Micro-Grants can fund up to $350 for the appropriate idea. The BDCL can help promote your project, call out for volunteers, etc. In some cases, we can administer and disburse the funds.

The city is especially interested in ideas for
  • Enhancing community safety
  • Inspiring community connections
  • Celebrating multicultural connections/awareness
  • Promoting beautification and cleanliness
  • Building community capacity
  • Advancing arts in the community

Snow clearing in front of your house

In early December, the city will enter Phase 2 of clearing away the recent snowfall. Please watch for signage signaling when Bonnie Doon is being cleared and park on already cleared streets, in your garage, etc. More...

Christmas in style!

You can help local families that are struggling by purchasing a chance to win one of four limo rides to two classic Edmonton Christmas attractions: Candy Cane Lane and Christmas at Bob’s House. Please buy a chance.

Need a website for your business?

The Edmonton French Quarter is making it easy for small businesses in our area to sell their products online. You can create an online store, commission-free by visiting https://francomarket.ca/sell/.

This & that

  • Our Mr and Ms Santa of many years are passing the torch to new volunteers; thanks Don & Karmen!
  • Bonnie Doon has (at least) five Little Free Libraries. The newest one has an unusual back story.
  • Flying Canoë Volant will run February 1 to 5 in 2022.
  • The Edmonton Ski Club is open.
