MICHAEL J DUKE

Noted local photographer Michael Duke has recently taken part in the prestigious Florence Biennale.

The Florence Biennale is one of the world’s leading contemporary art exhibitions featuring artists and designers from 78 countries.

Michael writes:-

"Being in Florence for any reason is wonderful as I love the arts scene, the history and culture and the food and people. This was a second time for me of showing at the Florence Biennial of Contemporary Art and Design.

After entering numerous photographic salons which led up to distinctions and entering on-line arts competitions, the organizers of the Florence Biennial had picked up on my name which is the reason how I got invited for the XII F-B in 2019. There was no hesitation in going back for the XIII this year.

One thing I found amazing is that it took place at all as the restrictions on travel and the rules of gatherings are still very tough in Italy. However, 450 of us did make it and the atmosphere was amazing. I think the feeling was better than 2 years ago when 700 exhibitors rose to the challenge. I think this to a large degree is due to the huge sense of relief that we are able to travel again - the tests and the masks just being treated as an essential part of the travel plans.

The Florence Biennale always has a theme which this year was 'Eternal Feminine' and this is why I chose these images ( Although no way could anything about me could be mistaken for feminine, my images did get quite a lot of discussions going). I managed to get some time to wander around and look at the work of other artists. I did wonder if there could have been a few who would try to push the boundaries into erotic, but this was avoided totally. That said, I was happily amazed at the variety of interpretations of Eternal Feminine/Eternal Change".
