Our latest news updates

A consultation on our Film Development and Production Fund has been published outlining the current offer within the fund, alongside some proposed changes we’re seeking your feedback on. The suggestions are designed to try to increase the range of funding opportunities for the development and production of films from Scotland. Please submit your responses by 9am, 21 December.

Scottish film, television and video games were celebrated at the BAFTA Scotland Awards 2021. A number of Screen Scotland supported productions were recognised at the ceremony including Ben Sharrock’s Limbo which scooped 4 awards on the night. View the full list of winners on our website.

Hackman Capital Partners announced the purchase of Wardpark Film and Television Studios which is currently home to the sixth season of TV series Outlander. This acquisition will ensure the studios continue to host prominent international productions and develop and provide secure employment for years to come.


Beano Studios and DC Thomson have launched Emanata Studios to develop the UK’s largest comic book archive for film and television. Emanata Studios will have offices in both Dundee, home of the comic archive, and London.

Buccaneer Media is teaming up with renowned actor Dougray Scott to launch a new production business, Buccaneer Scotland. The new production company will be dedicated to creating original international drama series with Scottish literary talent.

The first events have been announced for Glasgow Film Festival (GFF) 2022. In a new hybrid format, screenings will take place both in cinemas and online for the 18th edition of the festival running 2 - 13 March.

Industry opportunities

Scotland’s biggest television production, Outlander, is recruiting up to 32 trainees across various departments to work on Season 7 of the show. Full-time traineeships begin from January 2022. Visit our Outlander Traineeships webpage for full details on how to apply.
 
TRC’s FormatLab is a new training programme that aims to create the next wave of entertainment development talent for Scotland. The successful candidates will take part in a 9-month traineeship which will include industry training, expert mentoring and paid production placements. Applications close 17 December.
 
The application deadline for
TRC’s new RESET programme has been extended until 3 December. The scheme gives those made unemployed during the Covid-19 pandemic an opportunity to retrain within Scotland’s world-class Animation, Visual Effects and Games industries. 
 

Short Circuit is now accepting applications for year two of Convergence, a series of workshops, seminars and 1-2-1 sessions designed for Scotland-based aspiring screenwriters. Applications close 11.59pm, 12 December.
 
A Cinema Near You is a fixed-term development programme which aims to improve access to screen and cinema provision in Scotland. If you are part of an organisation or group that has an interest in developing local cinema or a screening event, submit an Expression of Interest by 31 December 2021.

Research updates

Screen Scotland commissioned research is being undertaken by Edinburgh Innovations Ltd to form a more comprehensive picture of film and moving image education provision in Scotland. Participate in this research by completing the Mapping Film Education survey.
 
ScotInform shared with the Film Education department their report of a ‘mystery shop’ exercise among secondary and primary school teachers regarding their use of Scotland on Screen website, a digital film archive curated by the National Library of Scotland and supported by Screen Scotland. The report will serve as a basis for further discussion with NLS about redesigning the website. Contact research@creativescotland.com to learn more.

Screen shout-outs

A number of Screen Scotland supported productions were released in cinemas and streaming platforms this month including A Castle for Christmas, The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, Rebel Dykes, Dying to Divorce and Crime.
 
Congratulations to the Scotland-made Prince of Muck and Prosopagnosia which screened at IDFA 2021 this month.
 
Television specials for the Screen Scotland supported Hermit of Treig and Black Black Oil were shown on BBC Scotland during the channel’s COP26 programming. Both documentaries are available to watch on BBC iPlayer now.
 
Congratulations to the Scottish productions nominated at the BIFA 2021 Awards including Poly Styrene: I am a Cliché, Rebel Dykes, Dying to Divorce and She Will. Winners will be revealed at the awards ceremony on Sunday 5 December.

Introducing our new International Distribution and Commercial Development Officer

Screen Scotland is delighted to announce that Sarah Smyth has been appointed to the role of International Distribution and Commercial Development Officer. Sarah is responsible for providing strategic support to film and TV companies to help them to develop international sales and distribution strategies for their projects. Prior to this Sarah worked with Screen Scotland as Executive Officer. She is a specialist in film festival delivery and holds a PhD in film festival research.
