The NPS Finally has a Director
*************

The NPS has a Director (finally)!

On November 19, Charles “Chuck” F. Sams III was unanimously confirmed by the Senate as the 19th Director of the National Park Service. As an enrolled member of the Cayuse and Walla Walla tribes, Mr. Sams is making history as the first Native American NPS Director. The Navy veteran brings over 25 years of experience working with state and Indigenous governments as well as in non-profit natural resource and conservation management fields. Mr. Sams comes to the NPS as the Executive Director of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon. He has also served as the National Director of the Tribal and Native Lands Program for the Trust for Public Lands. After five years without a confirmed Director, ANPR welcomes Mr. Sams into his new role and we look forward to working with him on the many challenging issues facing our national parks and our employees.

ANPR Logo Face Masks

Pre-Order Notification - NOTE SHORT DEADLINE

Do you need some fun and practical stocking stuffers this holiday season? Consider an ANPR face mask! This 2-ply cotton mask is comfortable, holds up to machine washing, and sports the colorful ANPR logo. It includes a pocket to allow insertion of an additional filter or layer if desired. Jeanette has one of these masks with a color NPS arrowhead on it and receives frequent compliments. She has put hers through the washing machine many times, and the color has not faded.

One ANPR member already plans to buy 2 dozen. Don't wait to get yours!  Here is the price breakdown:

1 to 5: $10 each
6 to 11: $9.50 each
12 or more: $9 each

Please email ANPR Fundraising board member Jeanette Meleen at jmeleen@anpr.org, no later than Friday, December 3 with the quantity you want. This is a pre-order only! If sufficient pre-orders are received, ANPR will then place a bulk order and follow up with you on payment and shipping.

*The masks will have the traditional, full-color ANPR logo pictured below (without the yellow outline you see on this mockup)*

Help us celebrate your success!

If you’ve moved to a new position within the NPS, or know someone who has, please let us know so we can share the good news in our "Branching Out" section of Ranger magazine. Please keep all announcements to less than 75 words, including previous park assignment, new park location, and your title. The deadline for the next issue of Ranger is Jan. 31, 2022. Email submissions to editor Melissa DeVaughn at mdevaughn@anpr.org

ANPR Mentorship Program

Help wanted!  Are you willing to give career advice to a new -- or long-time -- ANPR member?  Are you interested in helping grow the next generation of Rangers (NPS and other agencies)?  ANPR Mentors are in high demand right now!  It doesn't require much time or effort, honestly -- just a willingness to connect on the phone with someone looking for a couple of 30 minute informal chats.  It's fun to share one's knowledge and experience -- and highly rewarding to the "mentee" (person desiring mentoring).

I am asking new, willing folk to serve as ANPR mentors  -- and experienced mentors to "update their availability" -- so the Mentor Program has a new, refreshed list of experienced (seasonal or permanent, current or retired) "RANGERS" OF ALL STRIPES:  interpretive, visitor and resource protection, emergency services, natural and cultural resources, administrative, maintenance workers, supervisors, superintendents, fee administrators, regional directors -- in other words, all specialties of National Park Service -- and other agencies' -- work.

Please reply to Tom Banks (tbanks@anpr.org) with your name, email address, phone number, a brief (30 words or less) synopsis of your experience, current job status (employed, retired, or in between).  I will add your name into the spreadsheet with the list of willing mentors.  When I get a mentoring request, I'll reach out to you, or a group of you, by email or phone to see if you're willing to coach a particular individual at the present time.  Thanks!

ANPR DONATIONS AT WORK

Hi Paul and Jamie,

I wanted to give you an update that thanks to the generous support of ANPR, two US$500 grants have been approved for the families of rangers in Costa Rica who have died from Covid-19.  The $500 grants can equal a month's ranger pay or more for the recipient families in Latin America.

The rangers from Costa Rica who perished due to Covid-19 are:

This makes 20 grants that have been made by the Ranger Foundation to families of Latin American rangers who died of Covid-19.

Again, thanks for ANPR's support of this program.

Best regards,
Mike
