GERRYMANDERED CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICTS ON HOLD
The North Carolina Supreme Court on Dec 8th ordered that the state's March 2022 primary be delayed until May 17th so it can settle two lawsuits challenging Republican-drawn maps for Congress and the state's legislature. This also affects the filing timeframe since the primary is now postponed for an additional 2 months. That filing period is yet to be determined as of press time.

The non-partisan Princeton Gerrymandering Project has rated the recent North Carolina congressional map presented in November with an "F" for fairness, calling it one of the most gerrymandered maps in the nation. With the latest map, Republicans would have been all but guaranteed to win 10 of the 14 seats.

The way Watauga was mangled as part of the new 11th District (which included Wilkes and would have changed us from the 5th District to the 11th) to guarantee that Virginia Foxx would continue to win was particularly laughable. It dipped a tiny sliver into the Watauga just enough to include one of her several homes so she could live in the "district" without having to contend with the blue-leaning voters of Watauga.

Wilkes County Public Library Update
The Wilkes County Commissioners have agreed to call off the proposal to have Wilkes Public Library withdraw from the Appalachian Regional Library System. This is a relief for the many people that came to the meetings, wrote emails, submitted letters to the JP, spoke at commissioner meetings, and worked behind the scenes to show how much we care about the Wilkes County Public Library and the services it provides.

The one good thing that has come from all this is that our commissioners now know how important this issue was to so many people in the county, as well as help further advertise the many, MANY programs, benefits, large number of visitors, and the caring, hardworking staff at our library.

Thank you to new Commissioner's Chairman Keith Elmore for being sensible and thank you to everyone at Wilkes County Public Library for working so hard to make our library a jewel of public service!
ARE YOU READY to RUN?
We are eager to have candidates run in every seat we can in next year's election. As you read in the Gerrymandering story above, the candidate filing period will need to be re-opened at a later date. So if you are considering making a real difference at the governmental level, please approach the WCDP leadership and we can help guide you through the process.

This would affect US Congressional seats (Burr's current seat), NC Senate (for which Eddie Settle AND Shirley Randleman have filed), and NC House of Representatives (for which incumbent Deanna Ballard is running).

If you're approached by a member of the search committee we can help you have a positive experience and possibly even (gasp!) WIN! The people of our county and districts deserve a choice.

President Biden's Infrastructure Law Includes Broadband
WILL HELP MANY IN RURAL WESTERN NC

Thanks to President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, big changes are coming to North Carolina. In addition to creating jobs by repairing roads and bridges, upgrading public transit systems and much more, the historic bill will expand high-speed internet across the state.

Right now, at least 424,000 North Carolinians lack access to broadband, including much of Western North Carolina. North Carolina is expected to receive $100 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to help all North Carolinians do their jobs, participate equally in school learning, receive health care, and stay connected.
