Tuesday Updates

How We Meet for Worship

On Sundays, we meet at 10:00 in two parallel meetings -- In-person behind the Meetinghouse and on Zoom.  Children and their families are welcome to gather in the in-person meeting in one section of seats.  The children stay for the first 20 minutes and then go to the Memorial Garden for their First Day activities.  For those of us who are meeting on-line, here is the Zoom link for Sunday Worship and second hours.

On Wednesdays, Adelphi meeting convenes a midweek meeting for worship for healing - at 12:00. Here is the recurring link to these midweek meetings.

Additional connecting details --  such as phone connections -- for all meetings for worship, meetings for business and second hours appear in this attachment.

Takoma Park Friends Meeting Preparative meets in person each Sunday at 11:30 at the Takoma Park Presbyterian Church at Tulip and Maple in the library.  Then at 7:30 there will be an online meeting for worship on Zoom. Weather permitting, some Friends gather for an in-person meeting for worship at 3:00 pm on Thursdays.  Details for these meetings (including a definition of "weather permitting") are on page 2 of this attachment.

In and Around Adelphi Meeting

What's Going On in the Meetinghouse?

House and Grounds committee has provided photos of the meetinghouse (courtesy of Jill Leonard, photography, and Patrick Mulvey, captions.)  You can see all 7 of them here, and feel like a part of it all -- without getting in the way!

I don’t think many people appreciate silence
or realize that it is as close to music as you can get.

Tour Lonnie's Yurt-Style House

Lonnie Weinheimer’s amazing adventure building her Yurt-Style House is featured in a recording of a tour available now through Jan. 15.  Please contact Charlie Goedeke via Breeze to receive the link, which includes additional still photos and the fascinating backstory.  For Lonnie’s protection, she asks that the link NOT BE SHARED.  The duration of the tour is approximately 90 minutes.

About Those Pronouns

Chloe Schwenke offers a brief article on the significance of the pronouns many of us use on our nametags and under our little Zoom boxes:

"Using pronouns indicates in a very public way your commitment to the authentic expression of that of God in one of the most important dimensions or our lives – our gender identity."

Read Chloe's thoughtful reflections here.

Finding Help

Help goes both ways.  Friends have been helping each other through this pandemic and its aftermath.  Friends are prepared to offer spiritual, practical, and financial support.  Learn more here.

In the Wider World of Friends

Sandy Spring Meeting's "Daily Advent Meditations"

Every day from December 1 through December 25 on the meeting's
YouTube channel, Friends are invited to listen to a short reading from All Creation Waits: The Advent Mystery of New Beginnings by Gayle Boss, and then to reflect for a few moments on the story and its meaning.

New: Baltimore Yearly Meeting Announcements and Invitation for Matching Gifts

The Yearly Meeting announcements for December 10 are here.  The Yearly Meeting has also sent out a notice that we (all) have managed to meet one-third of a matching grant of $35,000 to fund BYM's many programs.  The match celebrates "firsts" -- first time donating, first gift of a certain kind, first time including BYM in a will, or first tax-free donation from an IRA.  Take a look at the list of "first" opportunities here, and consider whether you can help support BYM with a gift before the end of the year.

Friends Community School

Friends Community School was founded by Adelphi Meeting 35 years ago. The school has had various homes during those 3 1/2 decades, and is now well settled in its own place - a 17-acre campus in College Park - with grown-up alumni and 9 grades (Kindergarten through 8th grade.)

Have you thought about someone in your family attending?

Applications for next school year will be due soon (January 14).  There are also opportunities to open inquiries for future years.  Founded on and living into Quaker values, the school includes a range of Quaker and non-Quaker families, and is delighted to have reached the milestone where about half the students identify as people of color.

To apply by the regular application deadline, visit the Apply to FCS page of FCS's website for more details.  Special consideration for admission is given to qualified applicants who are members of the Society of Friends or regular attenders of local Meetings.

Here are several links to a closer look at education as it happens at Friends Community School.  You can also join FCS students, parents, teachers, and administrators for virtual Admissions events January 6 in the evening and January 12th at 10 a.m.  Details on the school’s Admissions/Visit FCS page.

December Couch Potato Activists' Alert

All are welcome to join with self-identified Couch Potato Activists this month to take one of several small actions:

Mosie Harrington writes:

# In 2020 our government advanced over $100,000,000,000,000 (that's one hundred TRILLION dollars) in weapons sales to countries we know commit severe human rights abuses. Winwithoutwar.org has a petition calling on congress to cosponsor the Stop Arming Human Rights Abusers. Go to Take Action.

# While you're at it, June Confer - who doesn't have a Senator of her own - asks you to also urge your Senator to vote for S.J.Res. 70 to block the sale of $650 million in new weapons to Saudi Arabia. Many of these go to further bomb Yemen causing the world's worst humanitarian crisis pushing 16 million people to the brink of famine. (That's 16 MILLION.)

# ACLU.org says tell your Senator to pass the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act.(PWFA) It keeps bosses from penalizing and even terminating women who have to miss time at work for morning sickness, prenatal visits, ER visits and even hospitalizations. It's already passed in the house.

# HR40 would establish a commission to examine the institution of slavery, its legacy, and make recommendations for reparations. ACLU.org will send a letter directly to your rep for you.

# You wrote your state reps to remove the governor from parole decisions. Now you need to write them to override the governor's veto!  Here is information from the Maryland Alliance for Justice Reform.

# And as usual, FCNL.org has a whole panoply of issues on which they'll do the heavy lifting of letterwriting for you. Go to Take Action.

Do a couple of these easy-peasy options right away. You'll go into Christmas liking yourself better!

AND OF COURSE, report your actions at  https://forms.gle/SFy.JGCuz7RgkX3jEA

Merry December, thanks, and Peace and Social Concerns thinks you are the cats' meow!

Reel and Meal Film:  "The Big Scary 'S' Word"

Monday, December 20 at 7 p.m.

Reel and Meal's feature this month is The Big Scary 'S' Word, which delves into the rich history of the American socialist movement and journeys with the people striving to build a socialist future today. This film explores where American socialism has been and why it was suppressed, and it imagines what a renewed American socialism might look like.

Kurt Stand and Irene Koo, members of Metro D.C. Democratic Socialists of America, will lead the discussion. Join us for a live film screening at The New Deal Café, 113 Centerway in Greenbelt, or register online to watch virtually over Zoom. Zoom registration is https://tinyurl.com/ReelnMealDec.  Here is the flyer, for fuller information.

Virtual Meetings for Worship and Work and Play

Virtual Meeting for Worship each Sunday begins with singing at 9:50 and continues with worship at 10:00, followed by sharing our joys and concerns, and  announcements. Following meeting for worship, we gather in small "virtual tables" for the potluck conversations we've been missing.  Then at noon, we move to a 2nd-hour discussion, a meeting for business, or other community activity.

*This link will be the same for meeting for worship every Sunday (and second hours and meetings for business and such) until May 2022.

Outdoor in-person meetings for worship will continue for now behind the meetinghouse.  Children will meet in the Memorial Garden after joining in worship for the first 20 minutes of meeting.  Click on this link for guidelines.

Our children's outdoor in-person gatherings continue on Sundays at 10 am., beginning with 20 minutes of worship with families behind the meetinghouse.  Children then go to the Memorial Garden for First Day activities. For information, please contact Rob Duncan via our "Breeze" directory.

Meetings for Healing

Bible Study

Friends gather for Bible Study each Wednesday at 7:30 pm via this recurrent Zoom link.  The Meeting ID is 917 6330 4821, and the passcode is 407700.  The group uses Barclay Press's "Illuminate" series of study guides, written by Quakers for Quakers. Beginning September 8, the group will focus on Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.  For more information, contact Mackenzie Morgan via this info in Breeze.
