A Naughty Letter from Lustre
To Whom It May Concern:
I like to start letters like that. It might make someone feel like they are in trouble for tightrope walking on something you shouldn’t be walking on. Something you really should not be in trouble for at all. It has a stern sound to it for a quick minute.
Well, it is THAT time again. I have a real love hate with the holidays and Christmas. Lustre dislikes obligatory dates and things she is supposed to do. For example, she likes to buy presents all year round and when she is told to do something, immediately, the rebel shows up. Yawn, it bores her and then her whole attitude shows up and she can be exhausting. Well, that’s what complex women/men/humans are if you want to call them that…
I think it is all more encompassing: can you love the whole woman or person? All of the pieces? The trying, the exhiliaring, the ugly, the beauty and the beast? Not just the pretty and well mannered dressed up pretty for the holidays?
This letter is already changing directions from what I wrote on the tiny water stained cocktail napkins that I used to draft this while flying last week.
I am just going to follow my wild heart and leave the other demons on those crumpled napkins and try to help you understand all that I am. My newsletter: my wild change of heart. Quick insight; is it weird that every time or oftentimes when I come outside to write my neighbor gets the blower out which I despise more than Santa Clause? Just wanted to put that out there. I have my noise canceling headphones on already because I know his tricks.
Back to me or Lustre or whomever this letter brings to your frontal lobes. Can you ride their highs and lows and be enamored with everything that is in between? Can you decipher the look on their face when they are hurt or struggling for whatever reason? I was struggling the other day with Christmas. I throw everything away after Christmas, including the decorations from the tree (if we have one) and this year we are GOING to celebrate it for a couple of reasons and we are going to have fun. That may sound a bit forced and it is but that is the plan and it will happen and it will be phenomenal.
The commercialism of it, the obligatory pieces of it, all of the parts of it that put Lustre out, made me have a moment and walk away from Clive while discussing it. I went into the other room trying to shake off the whatever’s that had come over me. Well, as I write this I know it wasn’t a whatever, it was a slight mishap from Thanksgiving that started to creep into my head and I did not want to repeat the incident and the hurt that came with it. Clive did come in and decipher the lost look on my face and helped and hugged me through what I was going through. Back to the holidays and the humans we hold close to our hearts… What do they mean to you? Can you fight for them when they can’t fight for themselves? Can you see into your own heart and own the contents of it while fiercely loving the heart of the other?
If so, I think these are real answers to hard questions and the malaise the holidays can bring if we let it. That is why I am coming back to Christmas and the celebration and the holidays and the gifts we are supposed to buy now. I think that is why Lustre buys gifts most days and does most things when she feels it. My Christmas to the humans I love is everyday. I want them to feel my love everyday. I want shiny and glitter to be everywhere all the time for them. Not just one or two days out of the year because we are “supposed” to.
Let's commemorate these holidays, while we celebrate and love our favorite humans. Everyday. Not just because it is Christmas and we have a duty to do so. Get the ones that love flowers on a random Sunday. Make someone a fabulous card for the random cheap thrill of it. Show someone you adore that you really love all of their nuances everyday. Life is really short or really long depending on how you view it. Live this life well. Go big. Build a statue in someone’s honor. Do something incredible. It’s all an interpretation so let’s make it a huge celebration out of it and show whomever they are our big deal. It is that easy.
See your Love in peach or candlelight often. Everyone knows everyone looks extra gorgeous in candlelight. Do something super spectacular for them. Make sure they know you they are. your kryptonite when they walk into the room. Get off your ass and greet them with a hug. A pat on the ass —something. Show them you are alive and they are what is making you feel the elation—In the best way! It is the best and cheapest act one can give to another. Play your hand. Show your cards, play their favorite record loudly, buy Christmas presents next week but never let a good heart not get the proper praise and sweet love and gratitude they deserve. Write them a song or a poem. Read it to them out loud. A hug is always easy, just make sure you are not putting a stinky armpit on their shoulder. A compliment or a love letter (Lustre's favorite) is easy too. Put this precious human first for a minute or ten (put your phone down) so they feel your love for them. Show them with an action. I love presents everyday. I think most people do from now until eternity. Let’s start now. Let’s always celebrate with a silly dance dedicated to this human just to show that someone you are not afraid to let them know how much they mean to you and then perform it for them. Who doesn’t want to have all of this unsolicited fun? I DO! Me, me, and ME!

Hell no, we are out there working, growing and showing off for all of you that are kind and loyal enough to keep coming back and wearing our t-shirts and hats and knowing our bartenders and managers by name. We have a lot of fun planned rolling out of 2021 and then while sliding into 2022 and would love to celebrate and adulate you and all that you are.
