Please join Steve Salzman and support children with hearing loss through the important programming being done at the Foundation for Hearing and Speech Resources, FHSR.org

In partnership with Bob Handler, I have had the privilege of chairing FHSR for the past 8 years and 2022 looks to be an exciting year of new programming and growing strategic partnerships with some of Chicago's leading institutions.  It has been a lot of work, and I feel very lucky that there are two exceptional people stepping into the Chair role effective January 1, 2022. I am very confident that Heather Bennet and Rudy Radasevich will lead FHSR into a brighter future.

Your donation will be put to exceptional use expanding the life experience of deaf and hard of hearing children.

Please consider donating to the FHSR funded Lurie Children's programs described below. FHSR is also actively working on developing a series of internet based music lessons for kids, developing a music therapy program and expanding the reach, scope and accessibility of the resource tools on our new website

My best, and have a Happy, Healthy and Safe New Year!..........Steve

The Foundation for Hearing and Speech Resources (FHSR) supports essential services provided by the Audiology and Cochlear Implant Program at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago.

Lurie Children’s has led pioneering work to improve hearing for children through cochlear implantation since 1991, when the first child in Chicago underwent this life-changing surgery. The program’s multidisciplinary 23-member team consists of audiologists, speech language pathologists, social workers, nurses, an educator and surgeons, all with specialized training and knowledge.
Working with their Audiology team and Dr. Nancy Young, MDHead of Lurie Children’s Section of Otology and Neurotology and Medical Director of the hospital’s Audiology and Cochlear Implant Programs, FHSR began funding:

  • Hart Family Cochlear Implant Education Coordinator, to support implanted children before and after implantation.  FHSR continues the funding support of this key role providing a crucial support service that places implanted children on a positive trajectory for services and appropriate school placement.
  • Hearing Aid Technician Providing fittings, repairs and ear molds
  • Bilingual Social Workers Supporting newly identified families of children with hearing loss
  • Special Equipment Purchases such as an Auditory Brainstem Response machine allowing infants to be tested unsedated in the clinic

Every contribution to FHSR helps improve the lives of children with cochlear implants. We hope you will consider making a gift to support these efforts. Thank you!
