Client Spotlight: HazAdapt

Ever wondered what it'd be like to be a grad student and co-found a startup simultaneously? Ginny Katz can speak to this experience firsthand! In addition to working on a Ph.D. in Human Geography at OSU, Ginny is also the CEO of HazAdapt, an app that provides Humanity-Friendly guides for emergencies and disasters.

What is "Humanity-Friendly"? Ginny describes it as, "HazAdapt's unique standard of technology development that means our tech is inclusive, equitable, community-centered, and humane. It's kinda our secret sauce." This unique philosophy and approach have been a North Star for the team in building an intentional organization and developing science-backed solutions to emergency situations.

This approach started to transpire in one of Ginny's first courses as a Ph.D. student: Human-Computer Interaction. With the desire to create a mobile app that would allow anyone and everyone to access life-saving information from their phones, Ginny found many of her classmates were excited by this idea. A team fire was sparked and two computer science grads, Uday Phalak and Omeed Habibelahian, cofounded HazAdapt alongside Ginny a few months later. We were fortunate to meet Ginny and her co-founders early in their journey with HazAdapt and have supported them as they’ve assembled a team, drafted a business plan, gained investment, and launched their first app. Ginny told us co-founding a startup as a grad student is challenging, but the university offers an excellent opportunity to develop project ideas that require research.

In 2022, Ginny and the rest of the HazAdapt team have big plans to expand; introducing new technology to help communities connect, adapt, and overcome hazards.

We’re so excited to be part of HazAdapt’s success story and to see where they go next! You can reach out to the HazAdapt team at outreach@hazadapt.com and download the HazAdapt app in the Apple Store or on Google Play.
