Dear Take Root Milwaukee Members,

While this year provided us with continued pandemic-related challenges, we are so grateful for your continued support and engagement. From recognizing Homeownership Month in June with a series of workshops, to hosting the second and third sessions in our HMDA Data Disparity Series (see recap below), and moving forward with our 10-Year Anniversary celebration, we were able to successfully connect with each other and the community in meaningful ways throughout 2021.

This year we also said goodbye to Program Manager, Johanna Jimenez, who we remain in contact with in her new role as Program Director for the recently launched Take Root Wisconsin. While we were sad to see her go, we are excited to announce that we have started the search for a new Take Root Milwaukee Program Director, and are circulating the job description within this network first!

Please take a look at the full job description and share it with anyone in your network who you think would be a good fit. We are looking to add a new team member with a passion for and knowledge of the homeownership sector, and the vision to lead TRM through another successful decade of helping Milwaukee residents achieve and maintain homeownership.

To close out the year, our Marketing & Outreach Workgroup again launched a foreclosure prevention campaign aimed at educating Milwaukee residents on the resources available to them if they are struggling to pay their mortgage and/or their property taxes.

Please
take a look at and use the marketing kit linked below this message to help spread the word to your communities.

Looking forward to 2022, we plan to engage our Resource & Oversight Committee in strategic planning and will incorporate many of the ideas shared by our members in workgroup meetings, Quarterly meetings, and HMDA Data sessions.

With so much attention on housing and homeownership issues in our community, we know Take Root Milwaukee will be a critical partner. Our first quarterly meeting will be held on on
Tuesday, January 11, 2022 from 10:00-11:30am and will feature City of Milwaukee staff and Community Development Alliance partners to talk about expected investments in homeownership. Look for a meeting announcement after the new year.

Happy Holidays and see you in 2022!

2020 HMDA Analysis & Credit Access Webinar
On December 3rd, we hosted the third session in this series, focusing on the release of 2020 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act (HMDA) data for the City of Milwaukee. We looked at top lenders, types of loans made, where and to whom loans were made, changes from 2019 to 2020, etc. We broadened our discussion to how racial disparities continue to persist in credit indicators that impact mortgage lending, and talked about strategies to increase access to credit for non-white and low- to moderate-income borrowers. This recent blog from the Urban Institute Housing & Housing Finance provided important context to this year's HMDA analysis: Closing the Homeownership Gap Will Require Rooting Systemic Racism Out of Mortgage Underwriting (October 2021).

Special thanks to Lamont Davis and Bethany Sanchez, our Education & Advocacy workgroup chairs for co-hosting the webinar, and TRM members Bill Kopka, Maria Prioletta and Irma Yepez Klassen for their support to plan the series. View the Recording, Slides, and “Top 30” Lenders list for the City and County.
2021 Foreclosure Prevention Outreach Kit
This campaign aims to educate Milwaukee-area residents on resources available to them if they are concerned about not being able make their mortgage payment and/or property tax payments. We have put together information on the Milwaukee County Mortgage Assistance Program, the City of Milwaukee's ten-month, interest-free property tax payment plan, and avoiding mortgage rescue scams.

Please use us the images, videos, language, and links included in our 2021 Foreclosure Prevention Outreach Kit for your neighborhood/organization newsletters, social media, website, and in direct mailings. You may also access and share posts directly from Take Root Milwaukee's social media handles (links below).

We appreciate all our members do to ensure more people in Milwaukee seek the assistance they need to avoid foreclosure!
