Kernow Maternity Voices Annual Report 2020/21
Pregnancy and navigating life with a new-born baby under the shadow of coronavirus restrictions can be stressful, upsetting and distressing.

Our annual report demonstrates how we've continued to be a critical friend to maternity services during the difficult Covid times, providing transparency and compassionate communications between families and services.

Our report highlights how we adapted to the restrictions, limiting us to online involvement and engagement, and how we were able to support families to access trusted and accurate information as changes happened.

Service user meetings
Unfortunately Covid restrictions have made it difficult to hold regular Committee and service user meetings.

Our plan for next year is to reintroduce these in a new way.  From March we will be looking to hold monthly drop-in style meetings at different locations across Cornwall.  The first three locations will be Hayle (March), Wadebridge (April) and Truro (May).

This will give us an opportunity to share what we've been working on and engage with maternity service users about their experiences.

These events will be advertised on our social media pages nearer the time so keep a look out for the details.

We're really looking forward to meeting you all in the new year.
Returning to face to face meetings
With community groups starting to take place again we're delighted that we've been able to start getting back out to speak to service users in person.

Talking to people about their experiences of using maternity services is absolutely crucial to the work of the MVP.  It enables us to feedback to and work with service providers to deliver our shared goal of being the safest, kindest and most positive place to give birth.

If you attend or run a community group and you'd like us to come along and visit please drop us a line by email.

Making change happen
A number of great recommendations came out of our '15 Steps for Maternity', 'Walk the Patch', and 'Maternity Journey' feedback reports.

There were some examples of amazing experiences which have helped hugely to support transformation, along with other stories that are helping to make a real difference to maternity service user journeys.

Some of the changes made following our recommendations include:
  • A complete revamp of the theatre and recovery areas, including adding images to match birth rooms, introducing dimmable lights

  • Producing a brand new operating procedure to support family centred caesarean birth, including the importance of immediate skin to skin, dimmed lighting, music and a quiet, calm atmosphere
  • Introducing a general anaesthetic caesarean camera to support staff in offering photos during caesareans when both parents aren't able to properly witness the birth
  • Producing a new, updated information pack for those choosing caesarean births
Volunteering opportunities
Could volunteering be your New Year’s resolution?

We're looking for passionate and diverse people to join our team of volunteers to support the KMVP.

We want our volunteer team to reflect all our communities across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and we're committed to ensuring that volunteering with us is accessible for all.

There are a range of roles available from reviewing documents on email right through to becoming a committed engagement volunteer and running events in the local community.

So, whether you're able to spend an hour here and there to support our work, you're in a position to become more regularly involved over the next year, or you'd like to get involved but feel you'd need support to do so, why not drop us a line to arrange a chat about what's available and what support we can offer.
