Looking back
by James Sleigh

It is always difficult to sum up a year in a few lines - especially a year like 2021, which has been so full of challenges, uncertainty and unexpected developments. We are very happy that in spite of all these, we have some great highlights to reflect on, which have kept us positive and inspired.

We have had to dig deep this year, deep into ourselves, challenge ourselves, and face many challenging situations. But what has been incredibly special has been that we have all worked together as a tight group, all supporting each other. Wherever possible we tried to create as many special moments for our residents and our staff as we could.

The last thing anyone wants to do at this point of the year is read lots of text, so we are sharing a few of our best images of the year.

We look forward to our break and to a bright 2022 - and wish you all well for the festive season.
Camphill Monthly Farmers Market
See you at our February Camphill Market
by Geornelle de Villiers

The morning of our last market for 2021 greeted us with pouring rain, but we kept our spirits high and set ourselves up for a cheerful day. The sun soon enough showed through and in the end we all enjoyed a pleasant market.

We raffled a special 3L bottle of Groote Post 2012 Old Man’s Blend red wine and a gift pack from our cosmetics enterprise. We did a live draw with each member of our audience hoping to be the winner. Congratulations to our lucky winner, Russel, and thank you to everyone who supported us.

Our next market will be 6th February 2022. Be ready for a day filled with overflowing love as we celebrate Valentine’s Day and the month of love. We will run another raffle complementing our theme. Please diarise the first Sunday in February as Camphill Market day.

Open 10h00 to 14h00 at our Community Centre.

Disability Day
by James Sleigh

3rd December is International Disability Day. It is also the birthday of Renate Sleigh, which seems incredibly fitting, and she would have turned 91 had she still been with us in body.

In honour of the day, we held a soccer tournament at Camphill Village West Coast to celebrate abilities - playing with a team from Alta du Toit school, and professional players from Hout Bay United Football Community. What a special day it was for our residents, who played, spectated and engaged. We left everything on the field and connected in new ways. It was a true example of shifting the focus from disability to ability!

From Camphill’s Fundraiser
by Janine Strumpher

Thank you to our supporters - without you we could not continue to exist and we cannot emphasise this enough. The last two years have been extremely tough, losing funding income due to individuals, businesses and companies having to save themselves to survive.

As all funding was diverted to Covid relief, non-profits have suffered during this time. As I talk to my colleagues in the philanthropic sector, I am sad for those who have had to close their doors. Non-profits are here to work where our government cannot, we are the ones on the ground looking after the most vulnerable in communities. We work hard and relentlessly to take care of our cause, that specific cause to which you have chosen to give your all. So this festive season, give up a gift and support your charity instead. Share your feast table with the hungry and do not think it is someone else’s problem. Because if we all stand together we can just do so much more, and for us in the philanthropic sector every cent and every gift counts and is truly appreciated.

I am often asked - how can we help?
  1. You can help with financial assistance, we need to buy food, pay electricity, security, communication, fuel and the list goes on.
  2. Sponsor or part-sponsor a resident with no family, become part of that person’s life, adopt them and make them part of your family, as we at Camphill have done for them.
  3. Buy our products - they are good for your body and your soul, as all is made with the best ingredients, patience and love.
  4. Support our monthly market, we do everything in our power to make it special for you and your family.
  5. Swipe your My School card to the benefit of Camphill, it is free.
  6. Donations in kind are used in the village, or sold in our charity shop to bring in income.
  7. If you have a holiday home, invite us there when you are not using it, to take those residents who never otherwise get out of the village for a much deserved holiday.
  8. Spread the word, tell people what we do. Subscribe and read our newsletter. We are on Facebook and Instagram. If you see a candidate that fits our model, inform their family about us as we can provide a great life for that adult.

Open your hearts, stay safe, enjoy quality family time this festive season, and love, laugh, care and share. Till 2022 then.
Santa Shoe Box
by Geornelle de Villiers and Delmaine Willemse

The Santa Shoe Box project is an initiative supported nationwide. This year Camphill Village jumped on the bandwagon and managed to pack 55 Boxes. We donated these boxes to Robinhill Special Needs School in Atlantis. Thank you to our admin team, group home leaders, carers and all our residents for their contributions towards this project.

We definitely did justice to the Armenian Proverb that reads “if the Village stands it can break a trunk”.
Never be a victim of life! Be your own conqueror
by Masixole Madyungu

My achievement for this year is the knowledge that I have done what needed to be done. I have set my goals and tried my best. Some I have achieved and some I have not, but giving up was not an option. Never say you cannot achieve something, even if it seems impossible at the time. No matter how difficult it may seem, we are only limited by the limitations we set for ourselves, imprinted in our thoughts. We are the master of our destiny and when we realise this, anything is possible.

My slogan for this last year is resilience, because we feel, we fail, we hurt, we fall, then we get up and keep going. So to 2021 I will say: I tried my best, I gave it my all and I am ready to give more in 2022.
Gratitude
by Delmaine Willemse

The winning houses from our heritage dance competition were spoiled with amazing house outings. Aquarius house visited the Two Oceans Aquarium and experienced the magnificence of the sea. Acacia house was bold and brave and enjoyed a 1 hour sail yacht cruise. Our carer was also treated to one night of luxury at the Barnards Barnyard.

We wish to thank Waterfront Charters, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the owners of The Barnards Barnyard for their generous donations and for putting big smiles on the faces of our residents.

Sponsor a Resident
by Janine Strumpher

We have embarked on a drive to find a sponsor for each resident who has no family or financial means. Without Camphill Village they would be on the streets where people with special needs are often victims of abuse and manipulation and at risk even within their own families and/or communities.

And without financial assistance we cannot continue providing this place of safety.

Living at Camphill Village West Coast gives people with intellectual disability the chance to live a full, creative and fulfilled life, to develop their abilities and contribute to their community. The life that we take for granted, is for many a gift. However we can only do this when financial support is found for the individuals.

If you can help, or know of Individuals or Companies we can approach please contact Janine Strumpher on 021 571 8600 or e-mail fundraiser@camphill.org.za
