Message from the President

In this holiday season, we are thankful for individuals who provide support for Durham Tech, local leaders working to improve our community, and students and instructors making a difference. We are thankful also for those who made the College what it is today – you can read about them below in the opening stories of our 60 for 60 series.

New Durham Tech 911 academy to combat Durham, regional emergency dispatchers shortage
“I have asked Durham Tech to assist the city in addressing the challenges with our 911 system. One thing is clear, we need more trained 911 dispatchers,” said City of Durham Mayor Elaine O’Neal. “Durham Tech is developing a 911 academy to provide high-quality, standardized training to prepare individuals to serve as 911 dispatchers for the city and other communications centers in Durham and Orange County.”

Occupational Therapy Assistant student takes first place in statewide competition for adaptive equipment

person smiling at cameraBarnes developed a hand-stabilizing resistance disc to promote the use of spontaneous non-dominant hand use in children with cerebral palsy and children struggling with hand-dominance.

She was inspired to create the device after working with a boy with cerebral palsy that had hand-dominance issues and low core strength.

“I had the idea for the resistance disc to keep his ‘good hand’ out of the way and working so his other hand could have more turns to explore his toys while also strengthening his core by bearing weight.”

President Buxton's statement on swearing-in of Durham Police Chief Patrice Andrews

Durham Tech is committed to continuing to provide qualified officer candidates for the Durham Police Department through our Basic Law Enforcement Training program," said President Buxton. "We also stand ready to support Chief Andrews’ efforts to reduce violence and improve safety in our communities. We look forward to our partnership with her and the Durham Police.”

WRAL: Helping patients breathe brings joy to UNC Health respiratory therapist

"If seeing someone get better, seeing someone get discharged, brings that much joy to me, then I am right where I need to be."

60 for 60: Durham Tech's Storytelling Campaign
George W. Newton, the individual behind the vision

George W. Newton was one of the original six Board of Trustee members of Durham Industrial Education Center. He was appointed by the Board of Commissioners of Durham County and served on the board for 26 years, including nine as chairman. Newton’s broader vision helped to shape Durham Industrial Education Center’s evolution to Durham Technical Community College.
