The Tri-Valley hits 30% Conservation in November

The Tri-Valley saved 30% of its water usage in the month of November compared to November of 2020. Great job! We appreciate everyone keeping conservation at the top of their minds. Every drop the Tri-Valley saves is put into the bank for next year! Despite recent rain we're still in a drought, here are some tips to help you save in December:

  1. Check for leaks inside and outside your home.

  1. Adjust sprinklers for cooler weather and rain events.

  1. Scrape plates clean, instead of running them under water.

In addition to water-wise habits, Zone 7 offers rebates to help upgrade appliances to more water-efficient options, including a newly increased rebate of up to $200 to customers who purchase an approved Energy Star Most Efficient clothes washer. Zone 7 Submits Update to its Alternative Groundwater Sustainability Plan

Zone 7 staff received the Board’s approval for the 2022 Update of the Alternative Groundwater Sustainability Plan (Alternative GSP) on December 15, 2021.

Zone 7 has been proactively managing the groundwater basin for over 50 years to ensure this valuable resource remains a sustainable source of water for future generations of the Tri-Valley. The groundwater basin is a critical piece in the Tri-Valley’s water supply system, providing a local water source during drought years such as this one. The groundwater basin is strategically recharged with imported water during wet years, to provide water to the Tri-Valley during dry years, when imported water from the State Water Project is limited or unavailable.

The Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) signed in 2014, requires local agencies throughout the state to sustainably manage groundwater basins. Basins ranked as medium- or high-priority are required to develop GSPs or submit an alternative.
In 2016, Zone 7 submitted its alternative plan. On July 17, 2019 the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced the approval Zone 7’s Alternative Groundwater Sustainability Plan, a significant recognition of the agency’s proactive policies of managing groundwater.

SGMA also requires that an update to the plan be submitted every 5 years. The update focused on addressing DWR recommended actions and comments from The Nature Conservancy, which were related to the Fringe and Upland Areas of the groundwater basin and Groundwater Dependent Ecosystems. The plan approved by the Board was completed with the assistance of a $500,000 grant from DWR and will now be submitted to DWR to meet the January 2022 deadline. The final draft of the updated Alternative GSP is available here.

Livermore Classrooms Encouraged to Participate in Cal Water H2O Challenge's Classroom Challenge

Fourth to sixth grade classrooms in the Cal Water Service area are invited to participate in the Cal Water H2O Challenge. The Cal Water H2O Challenge's Classroom Challenge is a project-based, environmentally focused competition for classrooms and school-based clubs.

The Cal Water H2O Challenge is brought to you in conjunction with DoGoodery, the WestEd K-12 Alliance, and Cal Water, and in partnership with the California Association of Science Educators, the Classroom Challenge is aligned with the Common Core State Standards and complementary to the Next Generation Science Standards and includes recommendations on how it can be integrated within your own classroom, while meeting curriculum goals.

The students of participating classrooms or clubs initiate, develop, and implement a 4-8 week-long project, focusing on caring for water. The grand prize is $1,000 college scholarships for each participating student, as well as a $3,500 grant. The registration deadline for classes is January 31, 2022. You can learn more information about the classroom challenge using the link below.

Water Quality Unaffected by California Wildfires

Zone 7 Water Agency examined the impact California wildfires had on water quality in 2020 and 2021 and found no significant adverse impacts to the water quality of treated water distributed to the customers in the cities of Livermore, Pleasanton and Dublin San Ramon Services District.

In 2020, the SCU Lightning Complex, near Lake Del Valle in the City of Livermore and the North Complex, near Lake Oroville, caught fire. In 2021, the Dixie fire burned near Lake Oroville. All these events threatened the Tri-Valley's stored surface water supply.

Zone 7’s water meets not only state and federal health standards, it outperforms many of them. Zone 7 operates two water treatment plants, Del Valle Water Treatment Plant and Patterson Pass Water Treatment Plant, as well as a state-of-the-art water quality testing laboratory.
